You forgot the pioneer role model for black mothers on TV. Julia Baker was a widowed (her husband died in Vietnam) single mother. She held a job as a nurse and worked hard to support her son and provide him a loving home and environment. She should be Number one on every list.

And her boss was a crabby old fucker. Lloyd Nolan, grousing and pissing and moaning alla time. She had the patience of an exasperated saint: he was always wrong, and she’d just sigh, and let shit play out.

Also, she let that ginger white kid with the monstrously oversized head in her house, to play with her son, which was a true act of kindness.

Very disappointed that there’s no mention of Mary Jenkins. She’ll always be a top 10 to me.

Glad you didn’t mention Harriette Winslow. She was cool, but her TV daughter disappeared without a trace and she didn’t even notice.

I’m pretty sure Urkel accidentally altered the timeline so she was never born. Only Steve and the audience were aware and he took that horrible secret to his untimely grave.

fabulous list, and while i totally get the omission of elizabeth sanford, you have to wonder what sort of saint she must have been to have produced someone like lamont, considering what his daddy was like.

Oh man, great call there. And we know she was indeed a Saint because Fred was always just a moment or two away from joining her.

I came here ready to start a fight if Florida Evans wasn’t #1.

I am deeply pleased that this wasn’t another “Hamilton Nolan Best Nuts” flamebait debacle.

‘DAMN! DAMN!! DAMN!!!’ (the best nut is the mighty cashew.)

It has to be Florida Evans. She was and still is reality to many of us. She is the mother that most of us know not Claire Huxtable.

Claire Huxtable was the bougie aunt that only came home when someone died and sent Mama or Daddy $20 for Christmas thinking that she had done something. At the same time, Florida was going without but finding a way to raise her kids and take care of Mama and Daddy at the same time.

I’ve gotta knock Florida down a couple of notches for the whole Black Jesus thing and not letting James go work on the pipeline up in Alaska. James would still be alive if he had taken that job!
