    For it to be a hate crime it needs to be something inherent to you (skin color, sexual preference, gender, and I will include religion on here but only depending on the circumstances) not a job you chose to do. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

    Lawmakers also need to realize this would be used on every cop killing regardless of reason or cause and that means it would be the most used hate crime law ever.

    This is unacceptable! I called my state senator even though it’s too late and this shitty bill has already passed through the state senate without much fanfare. (He voted for it.)

    I also called my assembly representative and let her know that I am opposed to this bill.

    I suspect that my calls won’t mean jack shit becuase I’m not a cop so who gives a fuck about me? Blue lives > Black lives never mind that I didn’t choose my race, unlike these prick cops who chose their profession (no doubt for the power they gain with the badge.)

    Let’s remember that cops are protected class because:

    • A history of discrimination against cops.
    • Cops were not allowed to vote for a long time in this country, and even after they legally had the right, obstacles were put in their way.
    • Cops are regularly harrassed in their personal lives.
    • Children of cops have a harder time getting into college.

    Oh wait, none of that ever happened. Fuck this bill and anyone who would even consider voting for it.

    I hate this. Your job is not a protected class. Last time I checked, you can just stop being a cop, but you can’t stop being black or a woman or gay or whatever. but if they are going to go this route, the only way to do it is to also repeal laws that specifically make it a different crime to do something to a police officer. Almost every state has laws specifically for “assaulting an officer”. If you are going to make them a protected class, then those laws need to go, because they are then double protected (while no one is protected from them). Sorry, you can’t have it both way (although I’m sure they certainly will because fuck the average citizen, these are heroes god dammit!)
