Wow. So black woman pays to have two tickets upgraded, and when it comes time to move a person out, the leave the non-paying white woman in first class.

Oooosh. Nice optics there American Airlines. So, this month I learned that I shouldn’t fly United (beats up customers), Delta (threatens to arrest parents and send children to foster care), and American (racist as shit). I guess I’ll be driving. See you in a week, Aunt Ruth. I’ll be long-hauling it.

She needs not settle for less. Clearly a mere apology doesn’t seem worth their time, she needs to cost them money and PR.

Though to be fair, an apology/admission of guilt is the one thing they’ll never give us. They toss money at bereaved families all the time, but never admit to anything. Trump was sued for racial discrimination, but will hide behind “no admission of wrongdoing.” Michael Slager took a plea deal for federal charges, but avoided the actual murder charge against Walter Scott. That’s wypipo’s game—true accountability is their kryptonite. That’s the best way to disrupt their PR. We cannot let them hide behind quiet settlements and closed doors.

Its true. They are making too much money off of us to care how we are treated. Domestic airlines are among the worst in the world. What an embarrassment. The whole sector needs an overhaul. But last week Congress only issued a stern warning to them. How convenient.

They both sound a bit clueless to me. Is this a joke?

I just kept wondering if I was in some sort of time warp and asking myself, ‘Is this what it felt like to be black 60 years ago?’”

Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.Click here to view original GIF

And GIRL!? “Severely tarnished”? I would have come home and cancelled my AA card that same day.

I bet she would’ve gotten some responses when they found out an account holder of many years who had earned such status was about to cut them off financially.

Primarily, I feel guilt. There are a million things that I wish I could go back in time and do to help the situation and stand up for Rane,” Novack says.

“There’s absolutely no reason why Rane, an AAdvantage Platinum Select/World Elite cardholder, should have been treated as she was...

What she mean there is no reason? There is a clear reason. And is her friend’s status a card holder the only reason why she shouldn’t have been treated as she was?

I think that my silence was both a terrible reaction as a friend and a testament to how far I have to go as an ally. It’s time that we challenge ourselves to do better,” Novack continues.

I know that stuff like this catches us off guard, but Novack had many chances regain her balance and speak up during this ordeal.

I would have still been infuriated that my friend had to speak up to get my concerns to addressed if I were Baldwin. But Novack is a prime example of how White “allies” need to learn how to use their privilege.

After I canceled my card, I might have canceled that friendship as well.

That line threw me too. Being black 60 years ago was incalculably worse than any of this and if she doesn’t know that then maybe she needs check her privilege.

What should she have done in the moment? Complaining (even as a white person), gets you booted from the plane.

I’m not trying to diminish the fact that she could have been a better ally, but I also don’t think either of these women speaking up would have resulted in anything other than getting kicked off the flight or arrested on landing.

The reason that the cardholder was booted was b/c she was black, but I don’t think the friend’s white privilege would have been a trump card over the airlines bullshit.

The airlines have gotten so bad in their fascism that they are abusing white people too (that’s when you know it’s bad).

When my fellow white people ask how to be a good ally, I’m going to show them this article.

When they say racism is dead, I’m going to show them this article.

When they say micro-aggressions toward women and POC* are not real, I’m going to show them this article.

*Or that they aren’t the worst for WOC.

      on being a good ally....

“Where the really sincere white people have got to do their “proving” of themselves is not among the black victims, but out on the battle lines of where America’s racism really is—and that’s in their own home communities; America’s racism is among their own fellow whites. That’s where sincere whites who really mean to accomplish something have got to work.”

      - Malcolm X (quoting from his autobiography, pulled from someone’s facebook via quick google search)

But seriously, if one has to ask...

      Don’t show them this article.

I have a crazy amount of flying to do this summer and I’ll be Black when I do it. These posts remind me to not just accept and ignore poor treatment. These assholes need to be recorded and held accountable.

Have you considered not being Black this summer? Also, if you’re overweight and Black, don’t be either. Hope you’re not traveling with a baby...(or now, a White friend). With these few simple changes I feel confident your flights will uneventful!

Oh how I long for the day when a story like this can just be about non-specific corporate dickishness rather than the obvious racism the company included as a package deal.

Sadly, I’m not sure which is even the easier thing to get fixed, the systemic racism in this country, or modern American airlines treating paying customers like cargo instead of people.

Oh, for creeps’ sake. They tried to substitute that reactionary sludge for an ‘argument’ today?

(Is anybody keeping track of this for the respective bar associations of the attorneys who have the nerve to try to argue this tripe? Because assuming civilization is restored in this country, I’m thinking a volley of complaints that anybody would dare try to argue the virtual progeny of Plessy v. Ferguson (against his/her fellow citizens in the 21st century, no less) is going to end up being in order.

Speaking of which - anybody know how that investigation of Sessions’ lying under oath to the Senate Judiciary Committee is going? What about the ethics complaints to the Alabama bar ...?)

I only discriminate against people who think Twitter is an appropriate venue for a complex complaint like this (/s). I’ve had nothing but bad luck with AA every step of the way and I’m a white male business traveler with them. Complete and utter jerks at every single step of the way, on every flight. I could easily attribute it to an agent’s personal agenda if I felt like I could use that angle. This seems like business as usual for the legacy carriers. I’m not saying there isn’t racism here, just that we have to take it with a grain of salt if nothing explicit was said.

I recently went to Ecuador and AA had the most accommodating flight times for our trip. As I repeatedly went to buy the tickets, the transaction would fail at the price stated. I reached out to CS and their response was they sold out of those seats. So I search again, same price/seats. I reach out again and they say by the time I was trying to buy them they sold out.

Long short, I try again the next day. Same price. Same flights. Fails. The utter disregard for the consumer is jarring.
