    4. We demand that all new incoming students from 2017-2018 school year forward (first years and transfers) go through a mandatory in-person diversity competency training in the event that the online module is not implemented by JUNE 2017. We demand that the training be reviewed and approved by A/BSA board every two years. We demand that every incoming student complete this training by their first day of class.

I get what they are asking for, and why they are asking for it. On the other hand, ceding control of incoming orientation to the BSA seems like a bad precedent. As much as you might want to, you can’t make people think correct. Bigots are gonna bigot. Instead of “diversity competency,” how about explanation of campus policies including the requirement to treat all fellow students with respect at all times.

Yeah but that’s the easiest one to deal with. Put on a half hour talk or an online test and reading (which they’ve likely already do). I mean even if the school and the group can’t agree the school can always not do it and claim that the students were bargaining in bad faith.

But being clear on the sort of behavior that is expected and what sort of consequences they will face if they misbehave is a way to protect Black students. It’s not just a tool to “change hearts”, it’s a way to make people be more competent when dealing with Black people. That’s a good thing.

How was it a reclamation? Is there history like with many old east coast schools (being built by slave labor) or some such?

Occupation implies an outside force. The students are part of the university community. Also, they are attempting to reclaim space in the Rosa Parks house.

“Having that red-black-and-green house in the middle of Stevenson College, which is a predominantly white-serving college, is a matter of symbolism and visibility,” A/BSA leader Imari Reynolds told Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

I feel bad that that is who the BSA leader had to talk to about this.

Because that guy? is this guy:

I can’t imagine how that footage is going to end up looking like after editing.

I was with them on the take over until I discovered it was pretty much all about the Rosa Parks house. Sorry but demands 1-3 didn’t warrant a 3 day sit in. That could have just involved a group walking to the presidents office and confronting him. Demand 4 however should be at every college.

You assume they have not tried to resolve these issues in less dramatic ways.

The existence of themed hoses and designated living spaces is very important in building and maintaining social and cultural ties among minority groups on campus. If the Rosa Parks House had been intended to serve that function, but was failing to do so, then that is clearly something the University needs to address, especially given the persistent retention issues with black students in the UC system.

I think that the campus should have a Ronald Reagan Caucasian Themed House.

Wouldn’t it have been simpler to just demand that the school be converted into a blacks only university? I mean if sharing a campus with wypipo is so traumatizing why do black students go there?

It’s hilarious that people mock “white fragility,” because this website would lead you to believe that black people are the most fragile human beings on earth.

3We demand that the university fund the ENTIRE exterior of the Rosa Parks African American Themed House being painted Pan-Afrikan colors (Red, green, and black) by the start of Spring quarter 2017. These Pan Afrikan colors represent Black liberation, and represent our diaspora, and the goals of our people.

Good to see they’re interested in assimilating into American culture.
