White friends and significant others can’t really understand being Black, nor what goes through our minds when we’re forced to process racism (and other intersecting forms of oppression) every day. In my experience, even with ones I’m relatively close to, 99% of the time they don’t even try to understand or empathize with me and others like me. Feeling as if your complete self isn’t being considered is mentally and emotionally taxing, and there comes a time where self-care comes first. The ideal of love is the total acceptance of another’s being, and if Barack found that in Michelle (and vice versa, because love is a two-way street), then more power to them.
Fuck all of these racist, sexist writers in their attempts to disparage the complex struggles of Black love and strip Michelle of her agency in the relationship.

  Not totally true. Born in queens, spent most of my summers in queens, lived around black people, always had black friends growing up, first kiss was a black girl, etc.
  I know why my black friends never went over 55mph, and why sales people were so eager to ask to help them in stores (make sure they didnt steal) and ive seen white liberals say they are blacker than a rich black friend of mine who was going to MIT because to many white people being poor has to run parralel to being black.
  Shows like living single and new york undercover are like comfort food to me, as is naughty by nature and biggie.
  I also know im not perfect, as a teen learning to drive stick in an empty parking lot a very urban looking black man started walking towards me from the other side of the lot. I was scared shitless, but decided feeling fear isnt rqcist, letting it control you is. So i stalled up to the dude and turns out he just wqnted to give me pointers on the clutch.
  Not all white people suck, but in all honesty im half ashkanazi so maybe thay plays into it. Which is also why im surprised the half japanese girl didnt get it, most halfies understand the feeling of not being accepted anywhere and having to define who you are for yourself.

At the root of these biographies is that it is not feasible a successful black man would willingly choose a black woman when given the options of white woman.
The half Japanese woman would have us believe the virtue of her whiteness outweighed a beautiful, educated, curvaceous, ambitious woman whose family accepted him (other media reports says Barack even went as far as to ask her father her hand in marriage and after being berated with his Republican views was told no).

  Not that i disagree with you AT ALL, it’s just that Michelle is ALL OF THESE, “beautiful, educated, curvaceous, ambitious” AND motherfucking SMART on top of them.
  Seriously, she is THE ENTIRE PACKAGE for young girls (and even adult women!) to look up to, as a role-model.
  I LOVED how, as FLOTUS (and before & after, too!), she* has always shown that it IS ok & a good thing for a woman to be smart and that she has never played down her intelligence.
  Little girls, especially NEED that message, with all the countervailing messaging of “don’t be too smart, don’t make the boys uncomfortable!” that they get.
