It’s not often the police that shoot an unarmed 15-year old are the good guys. Making someone else commit your suicide for you is a shitty thing to do.

Clearly, this kid wasn’t well, but I don’t think adding to the police’s already large death toll is the way to go. Unless this was an INCREDIBLY misguided “look how different cops treat white people” stunt gone way wrong.

They are NOT “good guys” in this situation. Killing this child was not the correct response. During a welfare check, lethal weapons should not be used.

It’s mind boggling to me, that in the year 2017, with all of the technological advances we have, that police don’t use more non-lethal methods to subdue.

Tranqs, Comatose through gas, Long-range tasers, rubber bullets, etc.

Nope, just shoot to kill first and ask questions never.

Sounds to me that unlike Tamir Rice, this kid was actually given a chance to process the request to drop the weapon, and then had time to drop it. But instead, he kept advancing on them. This kid sounds like someone who had a death wish. Which is so, so sad but shouldn’t be compared to Jordan Edwards, who was flat out murdered. If it’s at all worth comparing to any of the BLM kids, it’s Rice, as an example of how he should have been handled as to prevent tragedy.

But even then, I don’t think it’s really appropriate to compare any of those cases to a suicide by cop case.

I agree there shouldn’t be a comparison in this case if it was suicide by officers.

Regardless, if you look at the numbers of people killed by police each year it’s staggering. And, frankly, most of the people are white. I don’t get this Blue Lives Matter bullshit for that exact reason. What in the world makes anyone think the police should be judge, jury and executioner at the scene? And the majority of the time they straight lie in the police report. Who ever believes this?

This was suicide by cop and shouldn’t be Compared to Jordan Edwards.

How many black kids would be allowed to walk toward the cops, and get multiple warnings before being shot?

It’s still a load of crap. People shouldn’t be dying during a welfare check.

These cops seem to be under the impression that they are supposed to work risk-free whilst the public takes the risks by being out and about in their (the cops) presence.

This is very sad. Suicide by cop is always distressing.

The officers say they repeatedly told the teen the drop the weapon as he continued to walk towards them. [...] Police then said that they gave him first aid and he was rushed to Scripps La Jolla Hospital where he died.

Huh. This is strange, though. Black kids are shot on sight and not given first aid. Weird.

Did you just skip over the paragraph before that which describes the kid as a white male?

of course if this really was suicide by cop, it belongs in a different category than the murder of jordan edwards.

If these fuckers are just going to run around and kill everybody, why go through all the pretense of having “less than lethal” weapons? It’s 2017. The whole PLANET understands by now: You only become a cop in America because you are a sociopath who wishes to get away with your crimes, specifically murder. Law enforcement needs to start being more upfront and just tell everybody that if you call the cops for any reason, they’ll come and neatly murder you, thus solving the problem to their own satisfaction. Like instead of “Protect and Serve” (not in THIS century, or any other, boys), they should change it to “Murder and Cover Up”. It’s just smart branding.

You try doing this job. This kind of overreaction when someone points a gun at a police officer is NOT doing the movement for police reform any good at all

I worked in law enforcement for 5 years and twice had guns drawn on me. Guess how many people I killed? No matter your job, NOT killing people is really fucking easy, bud.

Do they not train police officers to recognize when someone is trying to get shot by them for the purpose of committing suicide? This situation has all of the warning signs.

This poor child didn’t have to die. They have non-lethal options at their disposal, not the least of which is retreating and calling for assistance, such as from a negotiator.

I remember incidents from a decade or more ago, one involving a mentally ill black man with a sword, the other a suicidal black man with a gun. In both cases the cops recognized what was going on and spent hours resolving the situation with no deaths. The mentally ill guy they spent a whole day trying to deal with him and finally knocked him off his feet with firehoses long enough to restrain him and get the weapon away. The suicidal man they negotiated with him until a sniper was able to take a clean shot and shoot the gun out of his hand, allowing him to be taken into custody.

Instead of assessing what they see and if necessary backing off and calling for backup, these days the mentality seems to be “We must instantly take control of the situation the second we arrive and if we can’t then somebody is getting shot!”

I’m curious-how you think the police should react when someone has a gun pointed at them and continues to advance when told to stop?

This is a horrible outcome for this kids’ parents, but to judge from the information we have now, the shooting was justified. (We haven’t seen what’s on the body cam, that may change things).

“The Counted” at the guardian is way more accurate than washington post and you can sort by all kinds of criteria to get the “full picture” They also report the link for the news report that the shooting appeared on as well.. Their count is 3x what washington post is saying.. 1092 to date
