Now Bilquis, like Mr. Nancy, is not a new idea.

that, fascinatingly, is the entire and beautiful point, every character on this show, in this book, is a manifestation of a people’s belief - at the core of the conflict, both for the old gods and the new in this story, is a battle for belief, and in a sense, worship.

in the book and to a certain extent on the show, every old god is introduced via an immigrant’s story - people who brought their gods and their beliefs with them when they came to america. practices wane, new generations forget where they came from and oral histories and struggles are lost - the new generation finds their own things to believe in, to spend all their time fascinated by, and new gods are born: media, technology etc.

i cant speak more on the show (nda) but the book is an amazing read - native cultures are intertwined and integral throughout, and unlike jk rowling and her incomplete at best and offensive at worst take on native american and american history, neil is a gd historian, and the reader, much like shadow and ricky, will come away a far different person from his, and our, immersion into this world.

Joel Murray (the man who got swallowed) is a lucky guy.

Yetide Badaki is pretty good. Someone spoke of her non-verbal acting and I agree that she does a lot even when she does not speak.

I wasn’t into the book, but I’m enjoying the series so far. Yetide Badaki is fantastic. Her scenes could have gone very, very badly. She’s that good, though. I love hearing how much she’s into the genre.

In Bryan Fuller fashion, the show is as much a visual narrative as it is a verbal one, and I didn’t know if I’d like it in this context. Then I realized that I haven’t been able to turn away from those stretches of no or minimal dialogue. And I’m particularly intrigued about how I’ll feel about its treatment of race by the end of the season given the themes its exploring and the episodes I’ve seen so far.

The visual is truly amazing! I expect them to win awards for it. Yes we will have to see how we feel by the end of the season. So far, I’m good.

Nice write up but I do have a little problem with the headline. What person hasn’t been swallowed once or more by a vagina in their lifetime?

I can’t remember the movie, but yes, I’ve seen it! Nightmare material.

I was sort of on the fence with American Gods, even after beloved Ian McShane showed up, because that opening sequence with the vikings was so straight out of Spartacus, season worst. Honestly, if it weren’t for my respect for Neil Gaiman, I would have just bailed at the five minute mark and never looked back. It was the scene stealing leprechaun from The Wire who really saved the whole thing for me.

I thought Mad Sweeney and Audrey stole the show in the first episode. And yeah the Vikings opening was bad. I don’t know why they changed it from the book.
