    I’m always interested in learning about these pioneers. I hadn’t heard of Coleman, but he sounds remarkable (and complicated in terms of his politics, perhaps).

      To be fair, the Republicans were not the same party back in the 60s and 70s that they are today. The playing field was very different than the clusterfuck that we have seen in the past 40 years.

      Absolutely true. It’s impossible to imagine a contemporary Republican committed to civil rights, the environment, or even basic ethical precepts.

    great man and devoted family. if you ever get a chance to interview prof. charles ogletree he’d speak very highly of william. tree loved will and admired him greatly. the vineyard won’t be the same this summer as it was when dr. goldson left.

    William Coleman is a testament to great and responsible Black Republicans before the Republican Party went crazy and became the far-right, racist political institution it is today. Mr. Coleman was an outstanding civil rights advocate and politician who did not sacrifice his dignity and his people for temporary, political benefit unlike the current brand of the few, remaining Black Republicans today. Any African American (especially, the young ones) could learn much from the legacy of Bill Coleman.
