The state was the only hope of getting Roof put to death. I don’t think the victims’ families get that. The State is just being lazy to take a plea in exchange for a life sentence and shuffle him off to Fedworld. The federal death penalty is rarely used. There have been only three Federal executions in the last 16 years, one of whom, McVeigh, gave up on appeals.

This article is a little too brief to really get into what the families know, but I think it’s safe to assume that they and their lawyers know that an actual death penalty is unlikely. The quote “He won’t ever feel the sun on his skin again” makes me suspect they know that this is effectively a life imprisonment punishment and not a capital punishment outcome.

The families of victims are diverse in their opinions about justice and punishment, but it wouldn’t surprise me if a group of churchgoers doesn’t want to see this little terrorist killed by the state, even as they profoundly mourn their loved ones.

Good insight. I think you’re right. I overlooked the comment from the families’ lawyer about the State case being an “insurance policy.”

Better that than martyrdom, perhaps. I’m unsure of what would embolden the racists and domestic terrorists more: giving Roof the death penalty, or having him languish in prison.

At first I wanted to deny he was a White Supremacist, since it seemed he was/is mentally ill, but reality is anyone who is a White Supremest is mentally ill. So he is what he is. The path penalty costs the government more money than just keeping him behind bars, so that is what I would like to see.

I am so tired of people acting like chickens in a coop. Chickens have a packing order based on the same ugly mentality Humans should be above that, but look at Oreilly, Trump, Pence, and many more.
