This is sad. Also, a reminder of the interesting racial history of Indians in South Africa, and the early career of Ghandi.

As British colonies, there was a fair amount of immigration between India and South Africa, and in South Africa races were divided into white, black, and colored (mixed). Indians were originally considered colored, but Ghandi worked to have Indians given full rights, i.e. make them white. Then he was just like “OK, I’m cool with that” and went back to India... with rest of the apartheid system in place. Not cool, Ghandi. I mean, I know he had another fight to fight, but still....

Thank heavens for Kathrada and his ilk to stay in South Africa and continue the fight to end Apartheid altogether. Now, how about we start looking at undoing the legacy of Apartheid in S.A.? You know, affirmative action, reparations, etc.?

Affirmative Action already exists in South Africa, racial quotas already exist in South Africa....and I guess here comes your reparations.

Yech. Mugabe made a complete mess of Zimbabwe, and continues to do so. On the other hand, going with “well, we’ll keep all the wealth of the country but you get to vote now so we’re all good.” is not much of an answer either.

I don’t know how to do it, but there must be a way to work quickly towards equality that doesn’t destroy the country’s agriculture and industrial economy. Is there some smart economist that knows the right answer out there in the internets?
