      It’s not that unusual. One of the founders of the Black Panthers became a fundamentalist, right-wing Christian in the 1980's. Eldridge Cleaver is a name I hate typing out but he’s a real piece of work.

      ETA: Actually, he was a Mormon Republican, a black Romney of sorts.

      The shitty thing is...they should be. If the IRS started determining tax status according to an organization’s purpose, then the government of the day would have open season on which organizations do and don’t qualify. If that were possible, Muslim organizations, Mosques, immigrant help organizations, the ACLU and NAACP would have lost their tax status on 2017-01-21.

      The IRS identifies the different types of nonprofit organizations by the tax code by which they qualify for exempt status. One of the most common forms is 501(c)(3), which is set up to do charitable, educational, scientific, religious and literary work. This includes a wide range of organizations, from continuing education centers to outpatient clinics and hospitals.

      Richard Spencer’s little group of Nazis do not qualify under this definition unless you’re just lax and have absolutely no standards at all. (Which has been the case since Republicans have made a big stink about not for profits which they seem to think they have the right to form without scrutiny. Yet another case where they holler and get what they want even though what they want is wrong.) By not paying taxes the rest of us are subsidizing these assholes. My Black ass tax dollars should not be subsidizing organizations that want to dispose of me. (well aside from law enforcement which I can’t do a damn thing about.) These people have no more business having tax exempt status than the Ku Klux Klan.
