I’m glad that people stepped up to help him but how fucked is it that his mom abandoned him? Could she not deal with his disability? Could she not afford it? I don’t want to jump the gun on thinking bad stuff about her because we don’t know all the details but, I mean, she did abandon her son.

Some people just don’t care about their children. It’s a sad fact and it seems so counterintuitive but it happens a lot more than we let ourselves believe.

I’m trying real hard not to judge the mom. I’m hoping there’s more to this story than we know.

I’m happy Victor got some help, but I’m hating. I live in Houston. Kemah is a tiny, 80% white, 3% Black, local tourist city. We visit for the boardwalk, near the Galveston beach, but are well aware that the White people there are not friendly to us outside of that entertainment district.

This woman helped a man who needed it and I swear that is noble. But . . . who let the media know this was happening? The woman’s business is named in the article and -will you look at that!- the pic isn’t the two of them on the corner or in a house, but here they are in branded aprons, at her restaurant. This is essentially a crowd funded advertisement for her business.

The white savior narrative helps the rest of the city keep its status quo and pat themselves on the back by pointing to the singular time the community rallied around this one guy. Houston loves to do that, too. ‘We all came together to buy a car for this guy who walks 20 miles to work’. They never mention or even consider the irony of their community voting for inequitable housing which requires him to work so far from home, voting down mass transit, voting against providing a living wage. Good for Victor, really. But there are millions of Victors, Victorias, and Juniors who never get to be King for a day.

      This.

Fuck a white savior. It’s their fault we are in this situation to begin with. Oh, thank you, Becky! For being a good person and not a piece of shit. People shouldn’t get praise just for being a good person, they should just be good people to begin with. You think if poor Victor started that Go Fund Me by himself he would have even made $1 K? White people (especially white women) do not know the power they hold.

Yeah, I hate that my mind went here—seriously, it’s one of those days where I’m glad I don’t have a “nuke literally everybody everywhere” button, because all y’all would be glowing right about now—but my first thoughts on reading this was:

      a) that’s some awfully convenient product placement, and

      b) how is this still needed in 2017?

Don’t get me wrong: fucking awesome for Victor, and this woman seems awesome too—even if she’s giving her business a bump, she’s doing a good thing and my rage is ABSOLUTELY not aimed at her. If I wasn’t on the other side of the country I’d stop by today and buy a dinner or something.

But motherfucker, nobody—black, white, rich, poor, whatever—should need some savior to come along and buy him some health care. Jesus, this young man is an American, this is not a child in the third world, swatting flies away behind Sally Struthers in a Christian Children’s Fund commercial... but that’s where we are! That GoFundMe is a technologically-advanced version of “All it takes is a dollar a day, and a fellow motherfucking American citizen might be able to afford his medicine and avoid having to go back to living on the streets.”

The rest of the developed world—literally every other major first-world nation on this God-forsaken shithole of a planet—provides health insurance to all its citizens. Not us, though! Oh, no, we give our citizens choice. The choice to either overpay for shitty insurance, or go bankrupt when you catch the flu.

Whatever. I’m sorry to anybody who read this story and felt some joy after a day of shitty fucking news. I’m just so tired of this place. I’m so tired of living in a country where the “good” news stories are “hey, look, some people still have basic human decency, wow.” I’ll flip away from this and go back to Paul Ryan telling me how happy we should all be that Republicans are saving us all from the scourge of a healthcare system that’s more cost-effective and far more effective in terms of delivering patient care, and then flip over to another story about another CEO of another failing company getting another multi-million dollar golden parachute, and then smoke a bowl, then another, then another until the rage is pushed back down far enough that I’m not shaking anymore, and then I’ll go to bed.

I’ll make a deal with conservatives. They can call us a “Christian nation” if this is what they mean, rather than the “Jesus said you would always have the poor with you” indifference that they excuse themselves with currently.

5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”[a] you are doing right. 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,”[b] also said, “You shall not murder.”[c] If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful.

Just stop with your reason and logic.

I’m always amazed Christians who don’t follow the charity part of the Bible don’t burst into flame when they cross the threshold of any church.

All it ever takes is some power and those who were once treated like shit forget what it’s like to be treated like shit and thus treat others like shit.

According to a GoFundMe created on his behalf, “It is told his mother dropped him on the corner and told him to wait for her to come back. He believed her. So he waits, and waits and waits.”

It would be a long time before I could stop my tears after asking him why he was out there and him telling me this. He seems to be doing better and I hope it stays that way.

I don’t know how you didn’t walk straight to a bar after the story about the child livestreaming her suicide. “FUCK IT! I’m taking a half day!” I don’t think anyone would have minded. I read the headline five times in passing before I could even click the story.

Before anyone blames the mother, you should know that Texas is one of those states that actively goes out its way to hurt the mentally ill, handicapped and anyone else in need out no fault of their own, and deny assistance to parents of mentally ill and handicapped children.

It’s truly incredible how kind and generous people can be once they realize that most people are just people trying to live and get by. They aren’t leaches, or evil, or criminals, or lazy... they’re HUMAN F’N BEINGS. Empathy is something sorely lacking these days, and our president* is making it much worse.
