*basketball player makes joke lowkey referring to the slaveholding nature of basketball teams*

*gets fined for being racially insensitive*

Seriously, I’m having trouble with this because it’s both a rightful shot at how things are and it’s somewhat self-deprecating. Who the hell are these people crying racial insensitivity? My wypipo senses are tingling.

And I’ve said this before, but where the hell those “free speech” people at when a brotha or sista catches the wrong side of it? Personally I think he has no business being fined (but am not unwilling to be convinced otherwise with the right argument), but maybe I just don’t get it.

Yeah, it is free speech, but that doesn’t mean massa won’t whip his ass for it if you know what I mean.

You know it is wypipo in the front office. The only NBA front office that has POC in it now is the Lakers.

Plus they are the only ones who get superheated when pipo other than wypipo tell things as they actually are or were, as opposed to how they would like the rest of the world to perceive them.

Just gonna lol forever that Iggy gets a fine for making a joke about a sport where the majority of players are black, but almost all the coaches, owners and GMs are white, and they negotiate, sell and trade players without regard to what the player considers home.

I mean, it’s a sport, they make a good living at it, but the league is probably more mad that Iguodala’s remark threw some actual light on what the league IS, and they didn’t like it.

Meh, a $10K fine is pretty damn steep. It should have been a “please don’t say that while in uniform in front of the media” kind of thing and that is that. Racially insensitive would be if he actually used some kind of derogatory racial slur. Didn’t happen here.

Right. If anything, black people should have been offended because he low key referred to himself as a slave.

To be fair, isn’t that basically how the owners see the players?

My husband and I frequently break into shuffling when we get a call to go in and we don’t wanna. This story is not news, and if it hadn’t been on camera, it would have been a non-issue. Still a non-issue to me.

SN: We watched Wilbon, Jalen Rose, and (sigh) Sage Steele “debate” this the other day. You can guess who felt it was a “double standard” for black people to use the N-word and dislike it when whites do it.

Don’t go to the comments section at the linked ESPN article. A guy is saying it’s a double standard because Iggy only got fined $10K when look what happened to Donald Sterling....

(I changed my avatar so I wouldn’t have to keep posting that pic in every thread....)

There’s a lot of people who work really hard to completely miss the difference between how a culture and people refer to themselves, and how people outside that culture refer to them.

But then again, personal responsibility is a sword they only want to swing one way, so what can you do...

Monique, on the topic of sports, I have found myself with only the NBA left as a sport I can enjoy. After sitting through some of the same university classes they direct the athletes to, I have completely divorced myself from college sports; those were total bullshit time wasters. (I’m a middle aged guy going back to school part time). The NFL is morally bankrupt and probably evil. And baseball is just too boring to care about.

With this current generation of NBA stars finding their adult voices on social issues as well as redefining the power structure of the league itself, the NBA is the only one left that doesn’t make me feel dirty for watching it, plus it’s glorious. 20 years from now, when Dwayne Wade is doing interviews, he isn’t going to be suffering from dementia and opiate addiction. His knees will be made of metal and plastic (so will mine), but he won’t forget his kids names.

He was fined because “they” wont ever understand the reference thats why. He was pointing out how it really is. The fact that most Black men seem to be aware but accepting of it though has always bothered me. Its not one of those things where you can just accept. Its one of those things that can change.

Saying nigga tho, that shit needs to stop.

You usually don’t see Iggs in any kind of scandal. After reading his words, I still don’t understand how he’s involved in one. I’m betting the n-word in the press conference was the tipping point for a fine. Draymond said some stuff about a team owner a few weeks ago and I don’t recall him getting fined.

He was fined because he offended white people. If he had pulled a Charles Barkley and denigrated all Black folks, the NBA and sports press would’ve just gone about their day.
