    Morning Stephen.

I have mixed feelings about the role of the press right now. I agree that the press can cover all of the “administration’s” actions but what has occurred is that the most egregious offenses are taking a back seat to the circus show. I am afraid that the Americans will not understand that this is happening while they talk about Spicy Facts back-peddling on the wiretapping claims. I have no faith in the American public to do anything proactive and have pretty much resolved, in my mind, that the American public will be content to let it all go up in flames because they aren’t smart enough to know better (save for the few of us who have devoted an arm and a limb to fight back against the “administration”). At times, it feels like the nightly news shows and other press outlets resort to viral clips or blips of coverage (hello CNN you keep propping up those problematic folks and you need to cut that shit out). So, for me, it feels like while we should have coverage of all of the “administration’s” actions, we just can’t. Because the American public is very dumb and only responds to content that is 1) viral; 2) entertaining (i.e. in the circus sense) or 3) spoon-fed to them. Simply put, I don’t trust the American public to take in any news and filter out coverage.

Nicely put. I think that there is enough room under the umbrella to cover it all, but I agree that the collective American attention span is tuned to viral blips. The American public got us here and I kind of hate them right now.

For me, it’s not “should they or shouldn’t they” cover his tweets, it’s that many in the media can’t seem to figure out what deserves deep scrutiny and what doesn’t. His tweet about Obama bugging his phone was important but now that most agencies have said it’s bullshit and his people are pretty much saying the same thing by walking it back, it should be moved to page 3 (until Obama eventually, hopefully, sues the fuck out of Trump, then back to page 1). Keep covering it but don’t give it equal weight as the 24 MILLION who will lose health insurance under Trump’s (yes, Trump’s) health care plan. Trump uses Twitter to deflect and distract. Yes, his lies need to be reported but don’t fall for the “ignore the man behind curtain” stuff every time.

So you’re right... cover it all. But don’t let the obvious lying bullshit distract from the not-so-subtle fascism.

Exactly! Sometimes the tweets are a distraction but sometimes they shed light onto the things he is doing that seem benign in appearance. Also in times like this you need to laugh too and sometimes the tweets show what a petulant little manchild he is and it feels good to mock him. So totally agree. Cover them but don’t drone on and on about them.

The fact that we are even having to have this conversation is insane. Our president uses Twitter (TWITTER?!), which from what I can tell is basically an online cesspool of horrible. Trump might as well communicate through bumper stickers. We had a fucking statesman in charge and now we have this....thing in office, convinced of his own brilliance because he was handed everything. If I didn’t already have a fever today, I would be convinced I am delirious and hallucinating.

This definitely annoys me - “While you were worried about X, Trump was secretly doing Y!” What if “X” actually effects people? Like people saying we were too distracted by the (initial) Muslim ban to notice Steve Bannon. Um, no, we fucking noticed. Also, just because you are not directly affected by a Muslim ban, that does not make it a “distraction.”

If the press isn’t paying attention to POTUS’s Tweets, they go unchecked as a line of direct communication to the American people. It’s very important to cover them.

I agree with you. There are plenty of people who pay attention to all/most of the shit going on in this administration. The people that get hung up on tweets or viral scandals are not the same people that have a interest in politics and knowing what’s going on around them and taking action. Like I might know who won the super bowl or who my home team is playing on a Sunday, but that doesn’t make me a football fan it just makes me aware of the most basic football shit going on around me. Most Americans are not the kind of people to pay attention to politics, and the ones that are aren’t going to be “distracted” by a tweet. If anything it’s more of a tactic to overwhelm so people can’t keep up, but there’s so much shit going on aside from his dumb tweets it’s hard to keep up anyway.
