    So is he looking at ANY charges (the linked story says he hasn’t been charged...as of yet)? Can you legally choke the shit out of someone even if you suspect they stole something from your store (assuming they didn’t attack you first, which the story seems to suggest she didn’t)? Even if you’re a “professional” security guard, you can’t do this, right? And is he allowed to detain them until the police show up?

      If he was black, he would have already been arrested, seen before a grand jury, convicted, and sitting in a maximum prison for 80 years (that’s what they gave the black guy for rape, and then the next month, a white boy did it, and served not one day of time, okay?). As long as you are not black, you can do what you will (cops do it all the time) and never get busted. Truth!

      You don’t get props for apologizing after doing a fucked up thing. You don’t get props for owning up to something you got caught doing on camera and with witnesses.       Given the general shittiness of “she/he did it first” and “I’m sorry if I offended anyone” apologies, I’m at least a little happy there are baby steps in the right direction, but yes, he fucked up and hopefully he’ll get to suffer some law enforcement (less likely) and financial consequences.

    Here in Canada you are told to back off if someone is actively stealing from your place of work, as it costs them more to deal with an employee getting mangled during their shift than it would to just cover the items stolen. You’d get in some serious shit if you went to tackle someone who was getting lippy or stealing some perfume, both from work and from the police.

    I suppose, as the store owner, he probably didn’t have to process that kind of information? Maybe it’s time for a vacation if you can’t handle the idea of someone stealing eyelashes from your store.

      While this reaction was completely out of line, especially since the lady was offering to show the owner her bag, I know this area very well. It is a sketchy area, where if the store owner just lets one person shoplift slide, the entire neighborhood will be getting the five finger discount on beauty supplies in no time. When you are an independent business owner, you CAN NOT afford to let people just walk out with items.
