It always really annoys me when people act like Allhu Akbar is inherently a malevolent phrase. I get that Arabic speaking Islamic fundamentalists shout it occasionally but since it essentially means God is the greatest that isn’t surprising or a unique use for the phrase.

Does it get yelled at fun things? If your team scores at the last second is it “Allhu Akbar” time? Seriously asking.

I’m not sure. Wikipedia has a list of some varied uses in the names of songs and such. But I doubt it’s an exhaustive list.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allahu_Akbar_(disambiguation)

Here’s the page on it as a phrase.

ETA: Apparently it is used in sports commentating. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takbir#In_times_of_joy_and_gratitude

The best part is that while neo-fascists everywhere rant about Sharia law and Islamic theocracies, one of Geert Wilder’s pillars of policy is to explicitly demolish the separation between church and state. In other words, turn Western democracies into theocracies. Apparently theocracies are a-okay if it’s hard-right Christian ones, a lá what the Polish PIS(S) Party works towards.

As an atheist I find myself caught between two stools these days. For the first time in my life I don’t even know who to vote for anymore. There don’t seem to be many politicians left who champion both reason, science and humanism and are grounded in Realpolitik and ethics of responsibility.

For the short term, vote against the ones espousing nationalism.

So, the entire concept of “Western Civilization” is pure horseshit. It started out as a proxy for value judgements used to promote white supremacy, and the half-assed attempts to make it a “neutral” term have utterly failed as people like King show. It’s massively reductive and junk history. Yet even lots of “liberal” people pay fealty to the concept and flip into a frenzy if you dare question it.

It’s a toxic construct used in transparently supremacist ways. I wish our society was ready to discuss that.

These knuckleheads probably don’t think of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle when they float their “Western civilization” card. Have they read a single work of Hobbes, Descartes, Morus? I doubt it. It’s been my experience that Nazis, or the “alt right” as Americans call them, aren’t exactly vell versed in history, or have a refined general education in general .

Oh they do. Most of them appeal to ancient Greece or Rome as proof of the superiority of “Western Civilization”. Of course they ignore that Greece and Rome have been vastly overstated for political and historical reasons or the role of “Eastern” thinking in Classical Greece.

I’d say on the contrary most of them quote fairly accepted pop-history interpretations and myths that just so happen to underscore their white supremacist views, in addition to more fringe white nationalist narratives of history. That’s the problem. The entire concept can’t be divorced from that baggage.

Twitter is such a joke. For every Milo there’s another hate preacher like Carl Benjamin (aka “Sargon of Akkad”) who gets reinstated. Their enforcement of community standards is a farce.

Everybody should switch to Mastodon and drain this swamp.

Anybody who didn’t already know Rep. King was a white supremacist has not been paying attention. He thinly veiled his past comments. The joke is that he is actively trying to whiten America yet is terrified PoC are conspiring against him and Cheetolini.

The other King ain’t so hot either...

      Illustration for article titled

      “mosques are incubators for terrorism”

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) said on Wednesday that if Eric Garner had been healthier, he would not have died after a police officer placed him in a chokehold.

“If he had not had asthma, and a heart condition and was so obese, almost definitely he would not have died from this,” King told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer during an interview.

“National defense and homeland security are issues that mean the most to me and there’s real issues with him, real problems with his views,” King said. “I don’t know if he’s thought them through, or it’s just like the guy at the end of the bar that says, ‘Oh screw them, bomb them, kill them, pull out, bring them home. You know, why pay for the Japs, why pay for the Koreans?’”

      Steve, Peter...they all suck.

Very tempted to call Rep. Sinema’s office (I live in Scottsdale) and ask if she would consider introducing a measure calling for Rep. King’s censure.

Native Americans, then add British, Dutch, German, French, African (as slaves), Scandinavian, Irish, Eastern European, and so on, and so on.

At what point did the babies become “other people’s babies?”

(Hint, when the immigrants started needing less sunscreen).

Any day now, I suspect that Rep. King will offer a bill with full funding for Planned Parenthood, free birth control, abortions, and sterilizations as long as the services are for people of color. That is the next logical step.
