I want to see this movie. But no one I know wants to go.

But how does a 6'4" black guy go to this film by himself without people assuming he is odd?

I will end up having to wait til it comes out on streaming like the previous lego movie. :(

My suggestion is the Sunday matinee around 11:30 or noon. Usually you have the theater to yourself. Or borrow a niece/nephew for a day out with Uncle Vanguard.

      It’s easy:

Pick a show time. Buy the ticket. Go to the movie. Enjoy yourself.

Note what’s missing: caring about what others think.

They’re all scratching their heads and wondering where does anyone see this as a gay movie?

If Batman didn’t hate Joker back, Joker is diminished, insignificant, unimportant. It’s about ego, not eros.

Journey with me, into the mind of an io9 editor:
“HA, there you go my peon nerds! My review, I’m the first one on the scene and I say this film is sub-par! Kneel before me as I am the first voice in this wave of momentum against this...
...whoa, wait, hold up.....Every one loves this movie? I’M GOING TO BE THE MINORITY VOICE?!!?
Uh...uh uh....QUICK, I MUST HIDE MY SHAME WITH SOMEONE ELSE’S OPINION AND LINK TO THEM!”
    *end scene*

That’s a fun theory, but not supported by any of the movies. It’s more of a yen yang dynamic than sexual attraction. They need each other because they’re opposites. If I had it my way, neither Batman nor Joker would have any kind of love interest.

Maybe not supported by any of the movies (though Ledger was a little clingy), but definitely thoughout the comics. Decades of “you complete me” and “you’re the Bat King and I am your Jester” made this kind of movie inevitable.

That’s what I’m talking about. They need each other because one is order and the other chaos. It is not sexual. At all. Ever. Believing it’s sexual is like being one of those supernatural fanfiction people. Someone can be important to you without you wanted to have sex with them.

“Why can’t two ostensibly straight men fall for each other like any other unlikely odd couple in a rom-com?”

Probably because they’re straight. Just a theory. The same reason conversion therapy doesn’t work.

I think you and I watched two different movies. There was the double entendre sure, but to out and out call it a gay romance? Hmm. I don’t think so.

I mean, if that makes it a better movie for you, great! I won’t say you’re wrong if that’s what you got out of the film. But I’m not so sure that was the implicit intent of the filmmakers, neither is that what I took away from it.

Not disputing or objecting to any of this.

Except... Dick Greyson is a gay icon? Uh... how? He’s a straight character and always has been. The only time the gay community intersects with him is when people try to joke about him and batman being gay, in a really degrading way, typically.

    Not very iconic.

Is this movie something I can take my 4 year old to? He likes playing Lego Dimensions with me, and I would be okay with that level of action/violence. He can sit through an hour plus long Thomas the Tank Engine movie, so I’m not too worried about the length. And I’d take him to the kiddie matinee or whatever, so he won’t ruin the experience for other patrons.
