I like the article overall, but I can’t agree with this:

and as much as it hurts America, the fake news charge is a white fight so let’s keep it that way

It really, REALLY isn’t just a “white fight.” Like...we’re talking about an active push to discredit objective fact, orchestrated by the most powerful organization in our country. That hits anyone who reads, and/or appreciates, objective fact with an eye toward determining exactly what the fuck is going on.

There are numerous races, creeds, and ethnicities affected by this. All of them, I’d say.

EDIT: The comparison, of course, was a stupid one to make.

I agree with your argument that about fake news being a universal fight, but I was speaking more to journalists feeling butt-hurt over the charge. The lack of diversity in journalism across all platforms is staggering.

Okay. I think that they have ample right to be “butthurt” (though much of this fallout is of their own making, IMO), but yeah, it’s just never a good idea to co-opt a “gut punch” word to make a point better made by just...like...MAKING THE FUCKING POINT.

    Wait... what?

I was 100% with you right up until the last line. The executive branch is actively trying to undermine the credibility of the fourth estate. The president of the United States is now an existential threat to the free press. A man who’s shown he’s patronizing and indifferent to black America at best and openly antagonistic at worst is manipulating public opinion by casting doubt on legitimate sources of information. I am failing to understand how that’s a white fight.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely agree that black history and the indignities and atrocities suffered by black Americans cannot be minimized to a prop to make someone’s clumsy point, it demeans the history itself and whoever’s speaking on it. (On top of that, the structure of Cuomo’s analogy was as clumsy as the content was ill-advised.)

But to dismiss the fake news charge as a white fight just seems awfully short-sighted to me.

Yep, exactly this. When we can’t trust the information that we ostensibly use to make life decisions (large and small), that’s bad. For, like, everyone.

Cuomo, wtf. His handling of Manafort this summer was one of my favorite things from the election season.

I would just like to point out that I hated Chris Cuomo long before his latest bout of foot-in-mouth-itis.
