The rationalization I hear most often from kids who do and say horrible racist shit (but still don’t consider themselves racist) goes like this, “I can’t be a racist. Everyone knows racists are bad people, but I’m not a bad person, so I can’t be a racist. I’m just trollin’ and people should lighten up.”
A lot of grownup Trump supporters utilize the same distortion. “I’m not a racist. Racists are evil and mean and I’m neither. I even like the black people I know and helped one change a tire once. I can’t possibly be racist. I just think white people should get first dibs on everything, and whatever is left over everybody else can fight over and I wish them luck.”
This mindset, of course, is just as disgusting as more overt forms of racism and bigotry and much harder to eradicate since, as someone once said, in this case the liar has successfully lied to himself.

Bakersfield (and Kern County as a whole) is a pretty depressing place, in my opinion. Despite being nearly 50% hispanic, it’s still a heavily republican area, that voted strongly for Trump in the election. Unrelated, but demonstrative, Kern County had the highest percentage of voters trying to ban same-sex marriages via Proposition 8 in 2008 (over 75%.)
So the deplorable thing this girl did is sickening, but not altogether surprising. And the pessimist in me sees that this child’s public shaming will only reinforce her beliefs that what she did was in any way acceptable.
