I love the Root on Monday mornings, always ready to take shit head on. Good Morning, Michael!

Many of the very people who have pushed Obama and Clinton to speak out more are the same people who didn’t initially want to talk to their white relatives about what it means to support a man who has an extensive history of bigotry.

    Yup!

The fact of the matter is that America took them for granted. Some of them sat back and let this shit happen. I did my part by voting for Clinton (unapologetically, too, so haters to the left), I’m still doing my fucking part. Obama and Clinton did all that they could and America let them down.

SIDEBAR: I found myself in the “not going to bother talking politics with family” boat, though I couldn’t give less of a shit regarding whether the Obamas or Clintons speak out.

If you met my parents, particularly my mother, you’d get it. I’d rather argue with a brick wall, because I could eventually take that fucker down with headbutts (provided my fucking head didn’t fall apart first). My dad flatly won’t discuss anything different from what he believes (which is infuriating in and of itself, because he knows that some of what he believes is bullshit), but my mom? You’ll tear your hair out trying to get the simplest of points across, completely school her in a debate, and all that comes from it is frustration, an elevated heart rate, and my mom convincing herself that she won.

It would be a better use of time to try to put out an apartment fire by jacking off on it. When people ask me why I skew logical (sometimes to a fault), I point to my parents, for whom logic is an annoyance.

Morning Thrumbolio, hope you had a nice weekend.

I take it your parents voted Trump? They sound a lot like my inlaws. But these conversations have to happen, particularly if we love those and/or care about those people. My inlaws are Republican and thankfully my husband is not. Our relationship is polite but contentious. I’ve made it very clear where I stand politically (which also means personally and professionally) and it has been hard for them (not my problem cuz my mother didn’t raise no bitch). My husband has always been the odd one out, too and I am grateful for a partner who respects and supports me (which I why I married him).

I dont know how Obama even does it.

After 8 years of suffering so many indignities. Being attacked from the right and his own party. Met with slight after slight, and the apathy of the country he still tried.

And then to have all of those 8 years to be undone because people couldnt check their sexism and racism. How does he not just come apart.

Its ridiculous the amount of disrespect that man got from Republicans that has neven been seen before...And the majority of those fuckwits that said the shit are the same morons who when Bush was president all went on about how anyone who said anything bad about Bush should find another country to live in.....Amazing how its alright for Republicans to to things, but damn the democrats when they do them

“ even when millions of its citizens blatantly disrespected them for no other reason than that the hue of their skin made them antithetical to the virtues of their America. So much so that Obama’s successor is the most unqualified president in U.S. history; a man who is small by every measure who won, largely, because he sold his supporters the notion that he could restore the nation to the lily-white land of yore.

So, mere days into 45’s administration, the same mediocrity and monstrosity that followed him in his private life and professional dealings have unsurprisingly followed him into the White House”

So...my issue with this point that writers on this family of sites continuously make, is that Republicans could have elected an explicit racist in Barry Goldwater over 50 years ago, as you claim they have done now, but even back then they could not stomach it. Instead they voted against him. America has progressed rapidly since then, you are arguing America has regressed since then? That argument just doesn’t hold. But by all means, continue to make it, and continue losing elections to come by not addressing the real problems at the core of the Democratic Party. Acknowledging that Barack Obama wasn’t nearly the President you all make him out to be would also be another good starting point on the path back to REALITY.

I like how the OP made no substantive, objective points to detract from Obama’s presidency and points to the fact that people didn’t elect a racist 50 years ago, so that’s unassailable evidence of progress. And then the masterful, predictable final stroke - THIS IS WHY DEMS LOST!!!1!1!

I still think that the Obamas’ first act after BHO left the seat should have been an Instagram photo from the shores of Kenya. Middle fingers optional.

So much yes to everything. Hillary and Obama don’t use us a goddamn thing right now. To even ask is petulant.

The entire Trump campaign/electorate, giving the BEST POSSIBLE OUTLOOK and the benefit of a miniscule (and ever-shrinking) doubt, was the equivalent of “I’m not racist, but...”

For all the “Hillary is just as bad” people, I hope those words are etched into your hearts for the next four years, like you wrote all your anti-establishment comments with the Black Quill. It doesn’t matter that you may have voted for her yourself. What matters is expressing that sort of attitude depressed enthusiasm, leading to complacency, and joking about Trump led to misplaced trust that fellow Americans could see through the orange haze. Well they fucking didn’t.

When progressives are fighting moderate Democrats, saying “You’re no better than a Republican,” it shows how shitty our side can be when trying to be everything to everybody, and the hazards of being uncompromisingly “woke,” when Republicans had no problems standing behind one of the worst candidates in history, with a shadow cabinet of white supremacists, just to ensure they could consolidate power.

It was so frustrating to see so many comments disclaimed with “I’m not a Hillary fan, but” or “She’s a flawed (read: not perfect, because perfection was required for her while minimum competency levels went out the window for the other side) candidate, but,” it was the progressive version of some cool girl nonsense.

It’s very disheartening, in general, that people who do have sound moral reasons for their beliefs don’t understand the compromises that have to be made in a democratic society. They think that compromise is going “against their conscience,” but then don’t concede how that facilitates something like this.

It’s not their fault, because if Hillary had bent to their farther-left stance, she would have won. (Nevermind how this may have alienated a substantial core of her voters, but they are just assholes anyway who aren’t as woke as they are, and the farther left they move, the more that moderately and “comparatively less but still” left and moderate people seem like they’re all on the right.)

I could not love this article more. You wrote EVERYTHING I am feeling. And it’s why I hope the county burns. Please repeal Roe v Wade, repeal equal pay for women measures; shutter Planned Parenthood; repeal Obamacare; stop the war on drugs, start a war, whatever. I want white women especially to be on the receiving end of all the bad shzt that can happen. They deserve to feel the pain first.

It’s a great initiative, but also super fucking depressing that even something as logical/straightforward as voting maps are a political battlefield. I vote we figure out an algorithm and put a computer in charge, because people are the goddamn worst.

Around that time, there were countless articles written about how to avoid talking about politics at Thanksgiving. This is a white-folks burden because talking about the election at a black Thanksgiving isn’t hard

I consider myself quite thankful that my (white) family and all my cousins, aunts, uncles, etc all felt the same way about Trump. Not an ““““economically anxious”””” one among that bunch. Made the holidays really easy when we could all agree how much we hated that orange fuck and how happy we were none of the States we live in went for Herr Drumpenfuhrer.

Yup. One of the great blessings this year was to discover that every single one of my beloved family members is just as appalled and aghast at the President Orangina as I am. Same goes for friends*. Yay, living in a bubble of sane family and friends! (It helps when you are a person of color, I guess.)

*Also possible that my friends know that I will straight up burn down their house if they defend the Vulgarian in Chief in my presence and are pretending to be appalled.
