    Pro-tip: this list is pretty intuitive, but if you’re a parent of a toddler soon to be starting pre-k, kindergarten or whatever it’s important to remember their fluid intake is likely to be reduced during the school day. If you don’t want them to get dehydrated and then often constipated adding these foods to every meal or as snacks in place of crackers or whatever can help increase their fluid intake.

      Except that for people who drink it regularly, it has very little diuretic effect and the effect it does have does not make you excrete more than the volume of coffee you ingested the first place. Coffee (or tea) is still hydrating.

      In fact, the article you referenced says this:

      “The most ecologically valid of the published studies offers no support for the suggestion that consumption of caffeine-containing beverages as part of a normal lifestyle leads to fluid loss in excess of the volume ingested or is associated with poor hydration status. Therefore, there would appear to be no clear basis for refraining from caffeine containing drinks in situations where fluid balance might be compromised.”

    Watch out trying to sub soup for water—it’s very salty. You’re likely still coming out ahead, but don’t treat it as anywhere near a 1:1.

      It certainly varies, but canned soups and restaurant soups can be very salty. I really doubt that people are making most of their soups from scratch, but even broth can be salty if you aren’t looking specifically for low-sodium...
