“We can confirm that (company A) is not in discussion with (company B) in respect of any potential investment.”

This is exactly what the corporate PR goon said before every acquisition in the history of business, ever.

Yes, surely we should believe anonymous sources more than the companies themselves.

They float the rumor then make the M/A decision after seeing whether the stock goes up or down.

All AAPL needs to do is flaunt that cash pile and McLaren will be on board.

There was absolutely no story in this from the start. I don’t understand why Jalopnik ran it and why Financial Times reported it. You don’t even need a business degree to understand that McLaren has absolutely nothing to offer to Apple....apart from clean headquarters maybe.

Other than being a car manufacturer themselves and a technology provider to many others?

I think they would a surprisingly good fit

If this is going to happen it will be to acquire talent and IP. Apple has plenty of money and experience to throw at figuring out the manufacturing.

McLaren is built around solving problems in innovative ways. Much of their racing and performance technology would also translate directly to light electric vehicles.

I’m going to round a bit here: The news of this has shown Ferrari to be around five times as valuable a company as McLaren ($2 billion as compared to $10 billion). McLaren had produced approximately 1800 cars in 2015 and Ferrari, like 8,000. I guess the comment could be “So what?” but it says something about the health supercar makers.

I’d say that this mostly says that Ferrari’s brand is stronger, which is a big old “duh”.

Mclaren has only started actually producing cars regularly for consumers this decade. Production is still starting up, and designs being made.

Mclaren could have made a few thousand P1's but didn’t because then you’re just trying to imitate Ferrari rather than growing into a real competitor with your own vision.

If they are denying it, then it must be true right!? Isn’t that how this works?

That has been my experience working in big Pharma on the buy-side; it’s deny until you die or press release, whichever comes first. Also, could be floating the rumor to test market reaction; Wouldn’t be the first time.

For those unfamiliar, FT is probably considered the premier financial/business news organization in the country. Not saying that this makes the reporting true or false... just very confusing.

FTFY. The Wall Street Journal wishes they were the FT.

This ain’t the Daily Mail we’re talking about. I’m not saying the FT is never wrong, but they don’t generally crawl out on limbs. Something is going on.

Exactly... that’s why I’m very confused by McLaren’s FULL STOP response. FT would not publish something so exact and news-making unless they’re certain.

This is all a smokescreen to hide Apple’s true target: Elio.

UPDATE: 1:18 PM: Tim Bradshaw, one of the reporters behind the FT’s initial story, says that the paper is sticking with its initial reporting:

As they should - they’ve seen the Technology Centre’s recent renovations
