    14. Tucker and Dale Vs Evil

    Illustration for article titled

Saw it for the first time last weekend. Love it. Don’t watch the trailer. It gives too much away. It is 99% comedy. There is very little if any horror in there. But gore. Lots of gore.

Don’t forget The Guest! Because you gotta love a movie that asks the question, What if Steve Rogers was an amoral sociopath?

Like Stranger Things, the movie plays subtly off a lot of ‘80s horror/sci-fi tropes — bullied teenagers, mysterious strangers with powers, sinister government agencies. And like the show, it manages to play around with the audience’s expectations in ways those older films never could. It’s basically the best movie John Carpenter never made.

I fucking love that movie. I’d also add on You’re Next (directed by the same guy who did The Guest). Because You’re Next is fucking awesome awesome awesome.

Also, Lance Reddick is in it as a government agent, so you can kinda pretend it’s a Fringe spinoff.

    John Dies at the End

And if you haven’t already, read the book before watching the movie. While the movie is fun, the book downright fantastic.

Then read the second one, This Book is Full of Spiders. Not as great as the first, but still better than the movie version of JDatE.

Seriously, David Wong is the shit.

I haven’t read the book, but after rewatching the movie a couple weeks ago and liking it more the second time around, I’m thinking it would be wise to give the book a chance.

Aside from the dog and the meat monster, you have movie that is like a mix of Burroughs/Naked Lunch, Lovecraft, and Clancy Brown (Highlander!) looking like a beefy Vincent Price, and all the while not taking itself too seriously in a Cabin in the Woods kind of way.

Yeah, I’ve watched it a couple of times... the movie was pretty good, all things considered.

The book though, that’s a whole different story. I’m just glad that I read it first.

      Hope you like it!

Yeah, uh, thanks for that, I guess. Why don’t we remind everyone of Highlander 2 while we’re at it?

Troll Hunter is a hilarious and dark movie, and I’m so glad io9 put it on my radar back in the day.

One of my personal recent favorites.

True Story: A buddy and i watched i together. He is half Swedish (and French) and i am half Finn half Swede, and both have enough living grandparents to feel our heritage. He made the drinks all night long - whipped Russians, i.e. black Russians with Pinnacle Whipped Vodka. Nom.

Anyway, by the end of the night, and for about 2 weeks afterwards, we had degenerated to only speaking Fake Norwegian to each other. Just a string of fake, Norwegian sounding babble. The frightening part? We both understood each other perfectly.

Our friends wanted to murder us, but hey. All good bonding stories end with profoundly annoying your other friends, right? :D

We watched The Circle last night. Surprisingly interesting for a movie about 50 people standing in place for entire movie.

Agreed. I am not normally a person who tries to guess endings and plots (because I am always wrong). But this one just begged me to, and of course, I was still wrong, all the way to the end!

    1) I strongly recommend the sequel to Dead Sno (Red vs Dead) which is in many ways (literally) the Army of Darkness version to Evil Dead: much cheesier, funnier, gorier (but not really scary). I found that it constantly went to 11 (as opposed to Dead Sno, which I felt held back a bit)

    2) The aussie horror flick “Housebound” is also great. Keeps changing back and forth between a comedy, a horror film, a thriller, and we’ll keep you guessing until the bloody finale.

    3) Poontypool!

It’s been on a bunch of lists, but just keep mentioning it until everyone sees it.

Housebound has the weirdest laugh for me, this very tense scene soundtracked to the ‘Hello Moto’ ringtone

A lot of great picks on here! ‘John Dies’, ‘Troll Hunter’, ‘Stake Land’ and ‘Dead Snow’ were a lot of fun, and damn fine movies. ‘Room 237', for me, was a bust. I thought it was going to be some sort of study/analysis about the theories, instead of the simple repetition of the theories that it was. Some of those theories were just.....out there, man.

    4. Night Watch: If it doesn’t already this should have a strong cult following. The concepts are delightful. Don’t worry, it’s not THAT kind of Vampire movie, I never really considered it one anyway. Then find Day Watch.

    10. Upstream Color: I wanted to like this movie and tried really hard (I’ll try again). What really struck me was the sound design. Try it with a good loud sound system or headphones.

Shane Carruth is the most overrated filmmaker out there right now.

Part of writing good movies is making what’s happening in them clear to the audience. He completely neglects this and relies on them seeming intellectual so no-one will question them lest they be accused of just being too dumb to get it.

      Bad writing.

I don’t think his writing is bad, trying to figure out what’s going on is fun. Primer was logical but Upstream not so much, I felt like a kid watching one of my dad’s movies. Stories aside, I really liked Primer and I did like Upstream Color just not for the same reasons or to the same degree. It’s not the type of movie to shut your brain off and watch but maybe I’m overthinking it.
