I am soooo not sure what to make of this! It’s extraordinarily puzzling to me that the new ship’s design is very clearly based on Ralph McQuarrie’s TMP Enterprise design (as this article has alluded):

It’s an odd choice, but I suspect I can live with it, given the production and writing talent behind this show.

Also...am I alone in thinking that the CGI in this teaser trailer was simply not good at all? I honestly think I’ve seen better CGI in Trek fan films, especially from the likes of Tobias Richter.

Really, really, really hoping this was just a quickly thrown together rough look at the new ship, as that wasn’t the best of intros, quality-wise.

yea with the less esp per season then older star trek, i am hoping CBS put some real money into this. your point about the CGI is dead on. I mean early shots from Axanar looked better then this. But its different, and need to see some more angles.

Hot damn, looks like a Starfleet-Klingon fusion (and drop-dead gorgeous). Imagine a ship crewed by an Alliance group or something... that could be so cool!

Could have sworn I heard a subtle cloaking-device sound-effect at the very end of the teaser...

I think maybe the Klingon influence is intentional, like maybe it’s part of the set-up? Perhaps a joint Earth/Klingon mission of discovery?

The music is also definitely Klingon-based, right down to James Horner’s “danger motif” from Wrath of Khan and Aliens (and a dozen other films; the danger motif is kind of a running gag in the film score community).

I suppose its a nice idea that they used that concept art for the design of the ship but goddamn if it isn’t ugly as sin.

    I’m not saying its a dealbreaker but....goddamn.

IMO, the JJprise is ugly. I can live with this ship. Looks like a Federation/Klingon hybrid.

We slapped a UFO onto the front end of a stealth bomber and glued some skis onto the wings!

Man, I was really hoping for something set post-TNG era. This looks kind of like a sequel to Enterprise, I guess? It’s pre-TOS era, at any rate. I mean, I’m really holding out hope that it’s going to be good, but I think Star Trek should be about moving forward rather than mucking around with prequels. Besides, prequels open them up to screwing up existing continuity.

I’m still optimistic, but I was hoping that CBS would turn the page again rather than skipping backwards to fill in between the lines.

Do we know for sure it’s pre-TOS? I heard it was taking place during the 70-year gap between TOS+movies and TNG.

How is that pre-TOS? I’m pretty sure they stated before that the series is set between Star Trek VI and TNG.

Seriously though.....I watch the he’ll out of it. It’s Star Trek. I have been watching it since I was six. It’s been a cornerstone of my life. Living with an alcoholic church elder as a stepfather, of course I looked to Kirk as a father figure. Later, when emotional pain would threaten to engulf me, there I was 10 years old, chanting in my head, “I am a Vulcan. There is no pain. I am a Vulcan. There is no pain.”

Later, the passion, empathy, and emotional intelligence of Dr. McCoy allowed me to come back from that, and feel and see into the hearts of others.

Picard and the rest....so accepting and understandable. So willing to sacrifice for their principles. Trying to grow, and to be better people, and rely on family of choice.

DS9.....Sisko’s humanity and will, contrasted with the tender love of his family...it’s losses and it’s gains. Being single dad after agonizing loss, but keeping his joy in his love for his son, and later, Cassaday.

Janeway...the wit of a Kate Hepburn, and steel of a Spencer Tracey.

And Archer....the open hand and the understanding heart, who saved what would become the federation

And the Kelvin performers daring to attempt the impossible, and succeeding....making a post 9/11 blockbuster and finding their commonality of the original cast, but making it their own.

I don’t care if the ship looks like a 1965 Chrysler Imperial. Star Trek is my jam.

Wow. Between Star Wars and Star Trek, Ralph McQuarrie has a professional afterlife like few other designers and illustrators. His ideas are being used to this day and Disney/Lucasfilm will be pulling extensively from his aesthetic for years to come.

Without McQuarrie and John Williams, Star Wars would be an obscure cult movie that TCM aired every other year at 3 AM on Sundays.

Williams, McQuarrie and Ben Burtt are the behind the camera power trio of Star Wars.

Discovery is the perfect name for a ship of exploration, and that ship is beautiful. Now all it needs is Captain Bassett :-)

Sadly, I recall Fuller shooting down that rumor, in an interview, some time ago. Which is a bummer, as I liked the anthology idea too.

Depending on how the show turns out, expect it to be shortened to DIS if it's good or DISS otherwise.
