I love Lifehacker so much, but every now and then some of the tips veer into crazy cat lady territory... I fear this is one of those tips.

You want to extend your shoes? Find a good shoemaker/shoe repair place. They’re usually not that expensive and they’ll do a way better job.

Ya, I mean looking at the actual image used in the post it looks horrible. The actual original article looks better and used leather. I do have some friends who have fallen in love with cheap kmart slippers to use for approach shoes when climbing, I could see something like this working for them. I’ve done the Sugru route before but I only got a few extra months out of the shoes and it wasn’t really worth it for me.

I live in the mountains of NC and I was skeptical if there was anywhere around who actually did repairs. I’m happy to say there is, though it’s still about an hour drive from my house.

Hoping the Kinja cognoscenti can help me here.....

I always wear out the inside heels of my shoes, where my heel meets the back of the shoe, not the insole (think just below the Achilles tendon). Without fail, EVERY pair. Does anyone else have this problem and/or know what a fella might do to fix it? It happens across sneakers/tennis shoes, hikers, boots, all of ‘em.

Josh, look for “heel plates” or “heel savers”, those might help.

I used Sugru to replace a sole inset that came loose from the main sole of my mules. I cut out the flapping piece of rubber then filled the area with Sugru and used the old rubber to print the Sugru for traction. After 24 hours I started wearing them and the patch lasted over 12 months of daily wear. Gave me a year of use on my favorite footwear, I just replaced the Sugru and look for another year of use.

As a sneakerhead, my solution is simple, don’t wear ONE pair of shoes. If you really like a pair of shoes, immediately invest into a couple/few pairs. Otherwise, don’t “wait” to get another pair when your current ones start to wear. If you have 6 pairs of shoes (not gardening type, but actual shoes), then instead of wearing a shoe 7 days a week, it gets worn once. That extends the life of the shoe several times over. I’m at roughly 60+ pairs myself, shoes come apart before they wear out. I’m NOT saying go to my extreme, but the same way you spend 8 hours a day in your chair at work and 8 hours in your bed, and should invest in those, you spend at LEAST 8 hours a day in your shoes as well.

I’d much rather go to a cobber, play them $20, and have my shoes still look like the shoes I love than try to “save” them with tips like these. Cobblers still exist.
