Or you could use your rooted Android smartphone (or tablet) to do all those things in an even smaller, self contained and MUCH more powerful package... You get a MUCH better, higher resolution capacitive touchscreen display, FAR better CPU with far more processing power, more ram, built in storage + possible micro SD slot, all the wireless connectivity you could ever desire, plus the option of using the USB2GO port to add pretty much any USB device (such as WiFi adapters)... It doesn’t even need to be your main smartphone, it could be last year’s model, which is still more powerful than the Raspberry Pi 2...

I’ve thought about this before for some of my old Android phones. Do you recommend any particular apps or possibly even a nicely bundled ROM for similar functionality to Kali? I love anything you can do with a Raspberry Pi as much as the next guy, but at this point, I’d probably carry a small laptop instead.

buyer beware this article is incredibly outdated. I found out after I spent the money. the raspberry pi 2 will not work with the screen he links. the current version of kali meant to work on arm will not work on this set up. Thanks for not updating this article and just copy pasta from 2013.

I just tested mine on the Pi 2, and it’s working, but I’m not sure if I did something in the configuration files I forgot to make a note of. What’s happening with it exactly?

Did you use the pi2 image from kali linux? Did you test it with the PiTFT? I used win32diskimager to write the img, put everything together and all I get is a blank white screen when powering up.

I’m having an issue when I am setting up the screen. After installing the kernel and rebooting for the first time, I’m getting a colorful screen.

Using a Raspberry Pi 3 and the Adafruit 3.5" screen.

the rainbow screen means something’s wrong with the video kernel OR it doesn’t have enough power.

Unfortunetly, I haven’t tested this project with the 3 at any point, so I’m not sure which it’d be

There appears to be a working kernel at http://www.whitedome.com.au/download/adafruit_pitft_kernel_1.20160323-Re4son-1.2.tar.gz

I’m having an issue with the wireless dongle linked in the article - it’s showing as (null) and will not go into monitor mode (using Rpi2, latest pi 2 ARM). Any ideas? It can connect to networks fine, but that’s it. For comparison, I tried my alfa awus036h, and it enters monitor mode with no problems.

hrm, no idea, unless they updated something in that hardware, which would be kinda lame :/

Interesting. I searched around and a lot of people seem to have this issue. Would you be able to tell me what version of Kali you’re running?

Oh awesome! I have an older adapter that I’ve been meaning to upgrade, its an Alfa AWUS036H I believe so maybe I’ll have to snatch one of these up.

If you’re feeling particularly industrious, a programmatic or hardware switch to kill the backlight on the screen, and an option to switch to AC power, would allow stealthy, long-term LAN infiltration.

Hypothetically speaking, of course. Hackers are terrorists. Richard Gill sez so.

    For anyone using rpi 2:

I think there is a mistake somewhere in the install instructions for raspberry pi 2 & the PiTFT 2.8 capacitive touch screen ... did not work initially, but after I installed it using adafruit’s guidelines and using

    ./adafruit-pitft-helper -u /root/ -t 28c

NOT ./adafruit-pitft-helper -u /root/ -t 28r (‘r’ for resistive screen, ‘c’ for capacitive), then the ‘touch’ feature worked.

I also did not install the fix for blinking cursor, and it works just fine. And note that the current version of Kali Linux for the Pi 2 no longer only starts with a command line login prompt — it goes right to the GUI.

oh right! I was using the resistive screen we initially recommended still and forgot to edit that part. Also, good to know the blinking cursor problem’s been worked out. that was annoying

Is anyone else getting a black screen with one white line in the corner on Boot? I have installed The TFT image from the Offensive Security Site and used Win32Disk imager to write it to an 8Gb card, I am getting the boot and then it quickly goes to the login in screen but doesnt supply enough time to log in and heads right to that screen. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

Hmmm, can you log in via SSH and launch the GUI with startx to see if that works maybe (it might take a few minutes to launch)? If you’re not sure the IP address of your Pi, this tool makes it easy to track down http://lifehacker.com/the-raspberry-…

That kali tft img doesn’t work with raspberry pi 2, and getting that adafruit tft to work with a pi2 and kali is extremely difficult.

So much so, that I’ve spent the last 5 hours trying all sorts of things to get it to work and I simply can’t.

My biggest issue is getting the ada-helper to run on kali. It looks like the repository is straight up missing from adafruit’s database.

Mine was up and running on the 2, but it’s entirely possible I’d done some configuration beforehand that I didn’t make a note of. I’ve updated the post to note that so people stick to the B/B+, but for now, have you tried doing any of the manual changes to get the output right? Or gone through their GitHub page to try that one? https://github.com/adafruit/Adafr…
