It's a good theory, but I don't think it makes complete sense. Priefer wouldn't cut you because he'd be afraid that he'd catch AIDS.

I can still hit the ball 45 yards outside the numbers with good hangtime

Great, now Raysism doesn't have to comment.

If no one ever says anything, nothing ever changes.

Which is why you should consider yourself lucky for never having come into contact with Helen Keller's diaper.

There is no doubt in my mind that football coaches, even at the pro level, remain some of the most backwards and blockheaded people of the mentoring world, or that the undeniably mediocre Leslie Frazier and his staff have made many bad decisions for many bad reasons. But you'll have to excuse me if I am a little skeptical of the events as presented here, if only for the fact that there would be little to differentiate this narrative from one martyring Tim Tebow as a competently replacement-level player exiled from the league and about whom a fear of "distraction" would serve as cover for distaste of his personal beliefs.

There's no chance we ever hear any of this stuff out of the mouths of Frazier et al, and for that reason I wish it was more about how to positively advance the cause of LGBTs and, more specifically, LGBTs in sports, rather than one man's quest for revenge against a useless franchise. Pointing out that the Vikings current punter Jeff Locke had a virtually identical yards-per-punt average at half the cost on a team that was going nowhere even if the aforementioned Ray Guy came back is too easy for them. And defending bigotry should never be easy.

Saying Tebow is a replacement level QB is a gross exaggeration of his abilities in the NFL. Kluwe is THE greatest punter in franchise history... Tebow is the beneficiary of a horrifically blow coverage in a playoff game.

This doesn't seem to be vengeance towards the Vikes per se, but more of a strike at Priefer who may be a leading candidate for the HC job despite his deep-seated hatred & homophobia.

Are you actually surprised your coaches didn't want you helping the Bears and the Packers?

I sincerely hope the end result of this article being published is Priefer being unemployable as an NFL coach.

Your actions created an environment where guy-on-Guy love was acceptable. That's just not right in my book.

My book is entitled: Ray Guy: Snappy or Crappy Punter.

He reiterated his fervent desire for me to cease speaking on the subject, stating that "a wise coach once told me there are two things you don't talk about in the NFL, politics and religion.

Yet coaches regularly have team prayers in the locker room or on the field, players constantly thank Jesus for making them play better than the other Jesus thankers on the field before thanking everyone else and so on.

Yeah, Leslie Frazier would never talk about religion, unless it's in a glowing newspaper profile titled "Man of faith, coach of fate."

      http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings…

I was kind of buying the whole "Frazier was a great guy even if he was a bad head coach" narrative this week, but this is utter bullshit.

He means you don't talk about religion except to praise Jesus for your touchdown or say you trust Jesus to get you through your ACL tear or pray to Jesus Christ Our Lord and Football Savior to make the other team miss a field goal. Some aspects of the NFL are basically licensed subsidiaries of Conservative Evangelical Megachurch Incorporated. The local radio station that covers the Vikings has a guy who does an on-air fire-and-brimstone sermon right before kickoff that blends biblical references and football terms.

So don't mince words, Leslie: You meant "don't talk about politics or religion that makes Baby Jesus and his angry paying fans cry."

It's even called the "Pregame Preach" — and for a little more relevance to this story, it's done by a former Vikings punter who's now a sideline reporter.

As a displaced Wisconsin native/GB fan who moved to Minneapolis about 10 years ago, I've always thought it was one of the oddest pregame segments I'd heard. It's made me wonder what else goes on in other local radio markets that no one knows about because it's so infrequent that non-locals would listen to those broadcasts.

Thank you for this. As a Vikings fan, I hope that speaking out for your beliefs wasn't what caused them to replace you but, as a rational person, I know that's not likely to be true. I also can only hope that you telling your side of the story moves the ball forward (ha) on making the Vikings and the NFL a place where gay players are able to be open about their sexuality.
