This is a victory for Uncles universally, who are usually either characterized as "wicked" "creepy" or deviant. Bravo.

True, although I've read that they've recently reappropriated "creepy," frequently using the term to refer to each other within the Uncle community.

I think this is probably more of a victory for girls who are essentially being sold into slavery. Not for men whose siblings have reproduced.

I think you've confused Islam with local cultural norms. Especially keeping in mind that arranged marriages are hardly a new thing, or confined to any one religion.

Wrong, this is totally a cultural thing. For instance, shit like this would not go down in Iran. In fact, in Iran, the average age that a woman gets married is 27 because a woman's education is prioritized. In Yemen, it's around 12 and in Saudi Arabia, it's 14. Take a look for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_at_fi…

Fuck whichever parent had a sister who self-immolated rather than marry young and still tried to marry their daughter off young.

she said "maternal aunt" so I'd assume it was her mother's sister. How in the hell can you watch that happen to your own sister and then willingly choose that fate for your daughter?

That assume that the mother had any say in this whatsoever.

An incredible story, and a girl of monumental courage. That being said, I worry that she still is not safe due to her proximity to her parents.

Sadly, this. They're going to kidnap her and marry her off or they're going to kill her for "dishonoring the family," whatever that bullshit means.

If she can somehow make it to a non-sharia law country she should be safe.

some adult man, living in saudi arabia(...), felt like it was a good idea to marry this child. DISGUSTING. the fact that an adult man would marry a child, let alone arrange a marriage with a child, is such a despicable act and her parents are somehow worse.

I'm thinking that her mother may not have much say in the matter; if she was sold of for marriage at the same age, she might not have any of the decision making power regarding her own daughter. It's possible she's a monster who is equally enthusiastic about forcing her daughter to be a child bride for some Saudi, but i would doubt it.

She deserves her chance in life, and her uncle serves a medal. It is so heartbreaking to think that if it were not for him, this obviously bright, passionate, articulate girl would have been locked away as someone's private slave for the rest of her days, never getting the chance to speak and be heard. How much beauty and light and human potential are squandered in this way? No way to know.

I commend her Uncle for his brave act. It takes courage for a girl of her age to go against the grain in a part of the world where many are killed for standing up for themselves under the guise of dishonoring their family. I really hope she stays safe and that none of these nutjobs hurt her.
