For the record, the other three copies of the list are located in museums: Two in Israel's Yad Vashem, and another in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum near the National Mall.

I can literally walk down the street and see one of the lists for free. Hell, if I show my government ID badge, I don't even have to wait.

Seeing the physical, original list is a completely different experience than simply reading a list of names from your computer screen. It's physiological. Like the massive wall of shoes that stops your heart for a brief moment: that's how palpable the pain still is.

That's the ideal purchaser, but they're in the hands of a collector now so you never know.

The US Holocaust Memorial Museum has an annual operating budget of something like $80 million — I have no idea how much of that is dedicated to archival acquisitions, but they might be able to make it happen.

As a curator (and, well, a human freaking being with a conscience), this makes me ill.

Why? At least someone thinks there's a market value for things of historical value.

Imagine how badly this thing would be treated if it didn't have the same kind of market valuation. There were lists for most transportation to the deathmills of Poland, but those lists are largely ignored, molding in a corner. This list, this one special list, represents to so many the larger set that it has generally accepted value, not just value to historians and interested individuals.

Maybe an Icon is worth something.

Which is all the more reason why it should be preserved so it lasts as long as possible. That's not going to happen in a collector's hands, unless they have a properly humidity, acid, and uv controlled storage or display area- and that's just the start. You have to worry about dust, air, oil from fingers... Something this important should also be available for the public to view as a reminder of what happened. The WWII generation is dying rapidly, and soon there will no longer be first hand accounts. After that we need to rely on objects to tell the story. Books are good, but actually seeing an artifact is much more concrete, especially to children.

      Specifically, the Shoah Foundation.

But what I'd like to know is what the sellers are doing with the proceeds.

The auction is open to pre-approved buyers only, so not much chance for fuckery with this one.
