I can't read past the first paragraph without wiping my face from the bullshit being spat at me as I read.

First off, Zimmerman is not white and this is not a white vs black bias/racist/whatever-flavor-of-the-month-it-is argument.

Secondly, you talk like Spike Lee. Don't ever talk, think, or act like him. He's a cancer to black america and I'd be shocked if every time he opens his month Dr. King don't roll over in his grave.

I am ashamed to be an american right now after how after so many years of progress we're still stupid enough to make race an issue. I've personally evolved passed that and early on in this case I took a lot of hate because I refrained from talking a bias side on the matter because I look towards what is just, not what I or anyone else thinks is "right." It's hard to think like that because of my own personal feeling towards certain things but it has made me a better person overall. I live without prejudice, and I live without hate, and I see things for what they are rather than what I believe or feel they are.

Yes, because your personal revelation means that race is no longer an issue for anyone ever. I can't decide if that's among the most naive statements I've ever read, or the most arrogant. You no longer "see race." Good for you. Come back when the rest of the country reaches that point because it's a long way off.

Also, perhaps you should not use a situation like this as a platform for saying how good a person you are.

I am so glad to hear that you have "evolved past [race]". Too bad you were not out there on that night 16 months ago because then that young man would not have been shot like the thieving and criminal nigger George Zimmerman knew he was. If only we were all like you.

    Well written.

As a minority male you are always presumed to be guilty and people expect you to just cope with it.

    Very unfair.

I had a conversation with a black friend of mine about this. We (assuming you're white) have no idea of the "rules" that are out there. Weird little things that we don't even consider: don't run unless you're running for exercise in running gear; don't EVER run with something in your hands, especially if its remotely valuable (yes, even if you own it); don't talk back to a cop, even if they're violating your rights; limit/no PDA with a white girl in public, even if they're just a friend; don't wear gang colors at night (easy huh? Try not to wear black just about any other other color, red, blue, green orange, grey, or white. Also don't wear red or blue with anything); if you're with your black friends at night, always stay in well-lit public places.

I don't disagree if you a black you stand out in some situations but this isn't 1940s

One of the excuses from assholes was that Martin got shot for not being polite with Zimmerman. Because you know, not saying "yes massa, sorry I'm in your town, massa" is reason to get shot. Racist assholes in America are celebrating this like the fourth of fucking July.

Some asshole retired NYPD detective on Fox said he died because of his (actual quote) "street attitude." Just a handy reminder that just because George Zimmerman wasn't a cop doesn't mean there aren't a shitload of cops who are indistinguishable from him.

Here's the worst part; the kid lived in the neighborhood. But the general media in America projects any black kid wearing a hoodie as a criminal. They broadcast that shit every night on the evening news..... and you wonder why??? Trayvon got his fate sealed when he had a craving for chocolate covered peanuts during an evening watching a game.

The land of the free my ass.

Let's be honest. The prosecution fucked this up from beginning to end. I really hope Trayvon Martin's family is preparing a civil suit.

I'm sure they are. Just like Ron Goldman's family. And they will probably win, just like Ron Goldman's family. But guess what? That's because the standard of proof is preponderance of the evidence, and the standard of proof in a criminal case is beyond a reasonable doubt. Those two are very different things. And in this case the prosecutor did not meet that burden because the evidence just wasn't enough. Truthfully, if the media hadn't essentially FORCED them to prosecute this case, they probably wouldn't have, because it is not an easily winnable case. Beyond a reasonable doubt is an incredibly high burden, and the prosecution overshot with a murder charge. Just like the prosecutor in the Casey Anthony case overshot by seeking the death penalty. It's just unreasonable and scares the jury. Probably would have been better off just pursuing manslaughter alone, not as a fallback plan. Honestly, the prosecutor probably did the best they could with what they had. I don't think even Juan Martinez could have gotten a conviction...

      Most definitely.

Wrongful death suit is the way to go. Its not justice as we like to see it, but it's the most effective route to get something resembling future deterrence.

It's actually the good cops that drag out the girls to ask if 'they're okay' in private. I was 17, dating a 16 year old white boy. One cool cop stopped us, didn't report us to our parents. That happened. He was being a good dude.

Yeah, and the dude I generalized as a cop in my story was a fucking park ranger. Like it or not, those dumbfucks still have authority over you. Why are you so fucking pissed off that a cop might have the decency to ask if a woman is being pressured into something she doesn't want to do?

I'm not dismissing Cord's experience- I've never been a young black man. But I've been a teenage girl, and I'm thankful as hell that I was offered ways out.

I'm disgusted by the trolls who downplay the impact of your piece. Race does play a role in this- if Trayvon was a white kid, Zimmerman would not have followed him, presuming guilt in the first place. Cord, this was a deeply beautiful reflection on race in America and I thank you for your thoughtful insight. I truly hope one day my fellow Americans can see that racism is everywhere and it's about time we acknowledge it and fix our culture.

I get that people are upset about the acquittal, but I don't really think that it's fair to say that he got off because "White guy kills black kid". He's not white. He's Hispanic (also a minority group that struggles with many obstacles in this country). OJ Simpson was black and killed a white woman (and man) and was acquitted. A white woman shot and killed her husband who had abused and tortured her for 20 years and she was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and was denied the right to pursue a claim of self-defense because there was no "imminent danger". (See State of North Carolina v. Norman). Sometimes justice is messed up. Sometimes it doesn't work out the way we wanted to.

O.J. Simpson had fame, money, and Johnny-goddamn-Cochran on his side, mixed with the most hilarious bad detective work the LAPD had ever done on a high-profile case.

That woman in NC was, well, a woman. Not to say there's bias, but she WAS a woman. :V

I don't think you can blame the jury. Trayvon did not get justice tonight, but given the laws and the evidence, I think the jury would have been wrong to vote any other way. We can look at blaming the prosecutors, Florida's laws, the police, the media, and the fact that we live in a society where people can run around desperate and scared and armed, but I don't think we can look at those six women and condemn them for their decision.

yeah...welll..the law is basically designed to allow white people to kill black people no matter what the "defenders" mental and violence history so....sure. The jury sucks AND is as racist as the law itself in practice. I'll go there.

True story, people get insanely upset with juries all the time which is understandable but most of the time they don't take into account the fact that juries only hear parts of the story.

It sickens me now to watch the Lawyers doing a press conference and the media asking them questions like, What was your favorite moment? The Lawyers laughing. Like they just played a sporting event or won an award. I wanna thank my family and God for giving me this opportunity. Human Race, BARF!

I don't think this will make you feel better, but they do the same thing in white-white cars in isolated areas. I've been in that situation before.

That being said, I've been in groups of white male teens and black male teens, and the differences in peoples' reactions were noticeable. I was the staff member, so was specifically watching the youth as well as the adults and it sickened me.

I dont know what else to say. I guess my whiteness shows in my shock at this verdict.

Replying to myself in case the author reads this and thinks I was minimizing his experience. I was hoping that for that one time, he could feel a little better about it. I know this shit happens, but only as an observer. This not guilty murder has shaken me, and I know I'm not making sense.

I'm very sorry. I would like to help, if there was any way to do so.
