I think my favorite thing about people who pretend to be Native is that they're all chiefs. So many chiefs running around, shilling stuff. Should strain credulity, but somehow it never does.

It's like there isn't one part of this movie that isn't a total fucking disaster. Amazing.

They got exactly one thing right: they used the William Tell Overture.

Here's what I don't get: the Sioux are from the midwest. The Cherokee (remember, Johnny's got some in him!) were originally from the South. In other words, pretty far from the Comanche, which Tonto is supposed to be.

so is the thought "eh, they're all the same?"

Yep. Do you expect anything else?

I've heard they also reference the Wendigo myth, which is from a totally different area as well.

True, though by the period of the Old West, most of the Cherokee had been expelled to Oklahoma.

It's so easy to trash Disney, takes a little more effort to read articles such as this one, by Kevin Gover (Pawnee) director of the National Museum of the American Indian.
Granted, it's the opinion of one N.A. man, and I've certainly heard opposing opinions by others. Just putting it out there.

The N.A. actors who played every single other Native American role in this film were stellar to a man (and woman). The words of the Comanche chief played by Saginaw Grant really got to me: "We are already ghosts" - reminded me of the code of Samurai, to fight as if one were already a dead man.

Sure. On the other hand, here's an article that explains how many parts of the movie can be considered extremely offensive to Native Americans:

It's great that one guy doesn't think it's racist. But that doesn't mean it's not.

I've read this too, and many of its linked articles. They're good articles and important, too. (part of why I've promoted your post).
Discussion on this is needed and welcome. I don't have all the insight and none of the 'rights' to speak on it, though, being a white lady. So I read what I can.

Anybody looking for good, solid depictions of Native Americans in the present day needs to watch Longmire, stat.

You guys this show is sooooooo good. The first season is on Netflix, and I think it took me a day and a half to watch the whole thing.

I can't edit my original post ('eff you kinja), but here's what I wanted to add:

ETA: Two episodes touched on Native American issues that are current, the stealing of Native children to be put in the foster system with non-Native families and kicking out long-standing tribe members so that casino cuts will be more profitable for remaining members. I think that's it's long overdue to see Native stories finally getting played out on TV (even though most of the MC's are white).

Longmire is one of the best things that is happening in New Mexico these days, I can't understand why the show purports to be in Wyoming. Every scenic shot is like a postcard and makes us want to get in the car and go there the next day.

P.S. Henry's bar is the Mine Shaft Tavern in Madrid, awesome hamburgers alert!

Goddamn. Not only will they not bother to cast a Native American to play a Native American in a film.

They can't even find a fuckin Native American to make some Native American inspired ass belts?!

Why the hell is this even happening?

    Why is this a thing?

I'm so glad this film is tanking. It's like nobody during the production wasn't like "We've made a huge mistake".

Yesterday I had an a conversation with a coworker (our HR lady of all things!) about the Washington Redskins. She belligerently argued it was neither racist nor offensive, and I should totes listen to her 'cause she has a card from the government saying she's 0.000001% Native American. I was most blown away by her indignation that I would even suggest it. Finally I said, "My head's going to explode," and walked away. This is why we can't have nice things...

The most obnoxious part is that the filmmakers had access to so many genuine, incredible Native artists in Santa Fe. They easily could have gone through extra lengths to ensure they had a Native artist. I hope this conman gets prosecuted for his appropriation.

I'd hazard a guess that most native craftsmen have no interest in securing contracts with Disney. If your goal is cultural preservation and authenticity, any association with a major entertainment company would be a huge pain in the ass.

There are definitely Native artists who would have no interest in this for the exact reasons you said. But there are also definitely Native artists who would leap at the chance (I worked with Native artists for most of my life as my mother ran a Native art-only store so this is based on that experience).

My husband is an 8th cherokee (but looks sweedish all blonde and pale) and has never used any of the benefits associated with that status because he doesn't need them. Don't get him started on people claiming native status and benefiting. The unholy speech goes something along the lines of "natives have to take it upon themselves to support and police a society where true natives rarely benefit and excellent marketers take advantage" and "my heritage is not a marketing ploy" and "fuck Ralph Lauren"

In conclusion check out excellent artists like Ben Harjo and Yatika Field for examples of great modern native american art.

Blah blah blah, I know right?
