I thought that's what you were supposed to do?

    • Pull all the way off the road into a well-lit area.
    • Stop your engine, turn off your radio, and remove your keys.
    • Turn on your interior light(s).
    • Get your license, registration, and proof of insurance.
    • Place both hands on top of the steering wheel (11 & 1).
    • Be polite.

    That's what I do, and I'm a 34-year old white male in a city that's 90% white.

I've always heard to NOT reach for license/registration until the officer requests it because the reaching looks suspicious from a distance. But samesies to the rest of these.

I do all these things, too. For my own safety and so the officer feels safer. And I'm white.

This breaks my heart. It always does when I hear it. It broke my heart when my friend in high school couldn't walk home after dark without a police officer questioning him because he's black and lives in an affluent 90% white town. It broke my heart when a different friend told me about not being able to get a cab as if it was no big thing.

It is a big thing. It is an incredibly big thing. All of the commenters who are white saying 'I do the same thing,' no, you do not do the same thing. You are being prudent, perhaps even polite. Black people in this country are trying to not get shot. Our fellow citizens live in completely justified fear that our goddamned police force will shoot them just because they are black. That's it, the only reason. It's not the same thing, it's not even close to the same thing. White folks justifying this shit, like justifying the shooting of that man's dog, or that kid who was thrown to the ground by a cop while he was holding his puppy, thinking that any of this is ok or justifiable is a huge part of why it still happens. Cops do this shit because they can get away with it. Please stop. Please.

Ugh, f'reals. Ignorance and one-sided thinking in full force today. "I do the same thing!" Actually, no, you get pulled over vs. POC prepare for discrimination. It's like comparing living in a particular country to visiting the same country on vacation, you are doing the same movements in the same place, but with a completely different purpose.

I was wondering if people don't think of him as Kunte Kinte as well. I hope everyone has seen Roots!

I was going to be so disappointed if I had to scroll too far to find a "Roots" reference like this ;p

Honest truth; I do the same thing (except hat)and I place both hands on top of the steering wheel and I'm a middle-aged white woman. I've seen too many crazy police stories and have known too many crazy cops. I can't imagine how it must be for people who aren't of my demographic.

Me too. Plus, I wait until they get to the car to go for my purse and glove box (documentation). Then I tell the officer where my documents are before going to get them. They're like wild bears, no sudden or unexpected movements.

He hasn't been shot for the same reason the vast majority of black people in this country have not been shot when pulled over: Because most black people aren't criminals and most cops aren't stupid.

Not sure why the actual video wasn't included, but here it is:

If you think this type of thing is true for only black people, you don't know any Mexicans.

Yeah, people in my own life like to debate me when I (a white lady, despite my avatar) try to convince them that white privilege is most certainly a thing and they have no clue the BS a lot of non-white folks have to go through in this country (because they never had to experienced it, so it must all be a lie). Drives me up a damn wall.

When will we take guns away from cops in the US? I've said it before on here, but they have no reason to be fingering their pistol while they're asking for my license and registration.
