Can I just say I'm super tired of the word "Mama" ubiquitously used to refer to mothers? Such as: "I'm a proud mama [bear optional]!" "You go, Mama!" "Us mamas know what's up!" It's so saccharine.

The only person who gets to call me "Mama" is my child. To everyone else, I am a mother — the full word please — and to address me without knowing my name, "Ma'am" will do.

I have to say, it irritates me too. I don't know if I can have an opinion on it though, as I have no children (yet).

Maybe this is a cultural thing. In Latino culture, "mama" is used frequently.

Breast milk as opposed to milk from some other orifice? Is it too weird to say "human milk"? People say "cow's milk", don't they? "Human's milk?" It just struck me odd.

Anyway, as per Silverstone, good on her.

    I'll let myself out.

Thanks for making me overthink that one as well. I'd say people never say "cow's milk," because the cow is standard, and you'd sub in goat, sheep, yak, or buffalo as necessary. As far as human milk, there's a precedent for naming things after the part of the body that produces them, like stomach acid or eye boogers.

Actually, the platypus and the echidna do not have teats, so they feed their babies milk that they secrete like sweat.

My freezer died in the middle of the night last night taking with it about 10 days worth of frozen breast milk. Fuck the hundreds of dollars of frozen meat and other food. That milk was priceless. I can imagine how wonderful having a "milk swap" is for moms who realize they can't pump enough for the day and have to go to work, or can't nurse period. It's an awesome idea.

      Oh shit! That is awful!

I'm always super impressed when women can build up a decent stash, much less a SURPLUS to the point that they can just give it away! I never responded super well to a pump. After I went back to work I was able to pump juuuuust enough for the next day while at work, but once my son was 6 months it wasn't quite enough and unless I wanted to pump once I got home as well (I did NOT) we started combo feeding milk and formula. When he was about 10 months I stopped pumping and he took formula during the day and nursed when we were together (mornings, nights, and weekends). We kept that up until he was 16.5 months, which worked nicely for us.

Ugh, and I thought I was angry when one of my bags leaked and a few ounces was ruined. And the time I accidentally left an entire day's pumping from work in the car. Major bummer, it's so much effort to get that much milk.

Fuck ovarian cancer indeed. Pierce's daughter, her mother, and grandmother all passed away from ovarian cancer. That's three generations of women dead. I can even imagine how her daughter must feel.

      So, so sad.

I actually poked around a little bit because it struck me as slightly unusual that he would have a 42 year old daughter (there’s only an 18 year age gap—which isn’t SUPER unusual, but that’s young to have a kid). Anyway, apparently Charlotte was his first wife’s daughter from a previous marriage whom he adopted after their own father died. They even took the surname Brosnan. So, as the daughter of a wonderful guy whose name I took when I was 8, this gives me even more feels.

      The entire situation is horrible.

Well. While I wanted to say something goofy about the breast milk swap, honestly my thought is good for Alicia. I personally wouldn't want to give my kids someone else's breastmilk but I've known other women who have bought other people's breast milk to give their kids. It always seemed strange but really in the end I'm all for supporting other women and their choices they feel to be best for their children.

Although, I don't appreciate the automatic assumption that breastmilk is the only and best thing for your child and therefore they MUST have breast milk to drink. I didn't produce enough for my children so I did both breastmilk and formula for them. You do what you have to do to feed your kid. It's not about you it's about feeding your kid.

That having been said, still I do totally understand if someone else decides they only want breastmilk for their kid. That's their choice. It's just not the only choice.

That's one thing that worries me about breastmilk swaps, that combined with the "breast is best!" mentality, women might kill themselves to try to obtain breastmilk when the source isn't known to be safe or regulated. Right now in the U.S., breastmilk swaps are unregulated so you have pretty much no idea who the breastmilk comes from, how it was obtained and stored, whether it is hygienic from handling, whether the person has any diseases, etc. Personally, I would not put my child at risk without knowing exactly what the source is. I'd rather just give her formula. It would be useful if there were breastmilk banks that could oversee the process and test donations to ensure safety.

There are non-profit breastmilk donation banks all across the country. If you don't live near one you can arrange to have it shipped. This is just one of them. A quick Google search brought up myriad options. https://www.hmbana.org/donate-milk

Hmmm I call BS on Henry Cavill and Kaley Cuoco. He's been asked and responds in every interview about this confirmed girlfriend Gina Carano and vice versa. Things change quickly especially in Hollywood but I don't buy it.

However, if it is true then our Henry certainly has a type. This is his ex-fiancee and Kaley lookalike:

I thought there had been rumors that Cavill and Carano were dunzo well before this Kayley Cuoco rumor. She hadn't been with him at any of his Man of Steel premiere stuff, and they had been attached at the hip beforehand.

Caveat: I did not pay attention to every single premiere he did, so this could have changed after the article I read.

When the media write 'sans makeup', they mean 'without the usual amount of makeup'. Gaga is obviously wearing lipstick, or her lips are naturally that red, in which case I hate her.

It's possible - could also be from exertion. (My lips often look like I'm wearing Clinique's black honey when I'm not. I'm just deathly pale, so anything that causes extra blood in my face means I look like I'm wearing blush and lipstick when I'm not.)

I worked in a hospital in central America with a wildly successful breast milk bank that dramatically improved the health of neonates in the area. I am a huge supporter of them doing that in the states - in fact I'm kind of shocked that it's not a standard. But maybe a Craigs list donation situation is ill advised just based on the need to screen milk for drugs/disease.

Ah! Yes, thank you for pinpointing the problem with this. I was thinking, I want to like this idea but couldn't quite put my finger on what was bothering me - screening! Maybe she should partner with a local hospital / midwife group to make sure the milk is ok.
