He's such a good guy. If there is anyone I would love to have a beer with it would be him. Please keep in mind that I can't stand the taste of that nasty shit so it would just sit there while I look all dreamy eyed at him as we discuss world politics and shit.

You need to suck it up and drink that shit. You can't have a beer with Jimmy Carter without having a beer. Me, I'd prefer to have the old bottle of Jamo with him and discuss anything but politics.

I am tired of constant updates regarding this stupid episode involving a racist, old white lady without repeated mentions of this truly exceptional letter:

    http://afroculinaria.com/2013/06/25/an-…

Really, I was struggling to care about this case (not because what she said and did weren't ignorant), until I read what this man had to say to her. It takes this entire story to a new, and hopefully productive level of discourse.

I can't forgive the bullshit about 'I'm 60!" Sweet Jebus, it's 2013. Being 60 is not an excuse for for lack of deep thought and empathy. That is ingrained racism that we white folk have to be aware of and root out. In ourselves and in others. It is not an excuse.

Oh, I agree. That anyone is willing to give her a pass for her age is wrong, and even slightly demeaning to older people, despite its apparent prevalence. It's never too late to change who you are by what you think and how you consider others; the open letter speaks to this very eloquently.

Jimmy is a successful world diplomat. To achieve that, he has to realize that it is completely possible for both exceedingly good and exceedingly bad behavior to exist within the same person and he is adept at focusing on and pulling out the good behavior.

Poor man doesn't realize that in our world of celebrity and snap judgement and internet commenters that a whole person is either entirely good or bad based on the single behavior we are focusing on today.

I don't get what you're trying to say.

Like, I'm suppose to give people a benefit of a doubt or empathy? But how else do I pat myself on the back if I don't jump straight to "racist" and "bigot"? I have to think about things? Uggh...

No....god No! I'm not saying that at all! Empathy and benefit of the doubt are what other people should have for us...definitely not what we should have for other people!!! What fun would that be?

So she called Jesse Jackson for advice. Jesse in turn called for people to not make Deen into a sacrificial lamb. I'm trying to figure out Jesse's intentions here.

A bit of misdirection from Jesse Jr's legal woes? Aren't more charges possible for his wife?

And edited bc the Feds just moved to seize Jr's homes.

Every time I've been dumb enough to get in an argument about this with her apologists, they've said at some point that I have to go easy on her, because Bill Maher (who's a racist asswipe who I'm tired of being told that, as a progressive, I automatically agree with) and Jesse Jackson (who, to quote Token, is not the Emperor of Black People) said so. I'm sad they've now got Carter to add to that particular Rolodex.

Bill Maher didn't even defend her as strongly as people seem to think. He said something like "It's just a word. Yes, it's a wrong word that people shouldn't use, but do people really have to just go away when these things happen?" I'm paraphrasing from memory, but I'm pretty sure I got it mostly right. I think he just defended her, and has defended others in similar situations is because of what happened to him with Politically Incorrect.

I think Carter is just saying that he's her friend and that he advised her to lay low and just try to make amends later, which is pretty good advice. He also says unequivocally that what she did and said was wrong. I don't see the problem here.

I haven't followed this story too much, but does she still say the word or did she use it once when she was 16 and now everyone is crucifying her? I'm just thinking if she used it many years ago when she was younger and dumber and has changed and is a better person now why should we burn her at the stake for a candid and honest retrospect into her earlier years? I'm fully expecting to get jumped all over for this and not immediately grabbing a pitch fork and joining the mob, but I feel the idea someone can change and the person you are today might not be anything like the person you were 20 years ago is something to be discussed.

You're right...but part of me is, "everyone just stop talking about this now". No advice (via the media) is the best advice. Because otherwise you will sound like her apologist, which she (her PR team) couldn't get right.

The only thing that should come out of this now is an entire online class on marketing/PR called "Cautionary Tales: Don't be this fucking idiot!"
