I don't have time today, but she also needs your stories. She needs to stay on-topic, otherwise they'll end her filibuster, so if you can share your 500-word story, it'll help keep her going.

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm curious. How do bathroom breaks work with a filibuster? Lunches? I know I should know these things.

She can't stop to eat or use the restroom, can't lean on the podium or anything else, must remain on topic and talk continuously. It's not for the weak.

They don't. She holds the floor as long as she can keep the floor. She can't lean on her desk. She can't sit. She can't use the restroom. She can't eat lunch.

Ugh, this piece of shit just suggested that women were too "vulnerable" when they need an abortion to make decisions. GGGRRRRRRR

UGH! Listening to him go on about how the clinics make so much money on abortions that there is no way this bill would force them to close because they are tots rolling in it and basically eating it like salad... I almost put my fist through my monitor.

Same here. I almost lost it. When I first started watching, I thought it was her own story she was sharing. And then once I found out it was someone else's story she was getting so emotional over? Ugh. Killed me. I hope she pulls this off, I really do. What a badass.

I'm watching now. Killing me. Some male Congressman just stood up to ask a stupid question. In her extemporaneous speaking, she is clearly very educated on the matter and well spoken, unlike some of her fellows.

I'm not an American, and I don't really get the whole concept of a filibuster. Although it's a great thing in this case, it seems weird that democracy can be disposed of if there's one stubborn person who can talk for a long time. Can anyone give more information on this topic as to why it's allowed?

The founding fathers were pretty uncomfortable with the idea of simple majority rule, and a lot of our most puzzling civic artifacts are reflections of that discomfort (electoral college, indirect election of senators, 2 senators per state regardless of size/population, filibusters). In its purest form, it prevents a bare 50.5% majority from running roughshod over a 49.5% minority by giving the minority voice power to state its case and requiring that the majority drum up a supermajority to silence them. The point was to try to make people compromise and pass bills that wouldn't upset anyone enough that they would take the extreme step of filibustering.

I live right down the street from a clinic that performs abortions as well as a "crisis pregnancy center".

Guess which one has annoying Catholics* standing outside of it every weekend?

*They could just be holding rosaries for shits n' giggles but I doubt it.

I got asked to leave a Catholic student association in college because I wouldn't pray outside the clinic. I was pro-life at the time, but it felt wrong and judgmental. Some things don't change.

I live in NYC, but am visiting the family in Dallas for the next few week. Anyone know of things that can be done in Dallas to support? I'd love to help in any ways.

    Thanks!

Replying to promote just in case anyone might know. Her main office is in Fort Worth (maybe 45 minute drive from Dallas) - a nice note or small gift basket thanking her would probably be much appreciated! She also went to TCU (located right by her office), and I'm thinking of ordering a bear from their gift shop or something and sending it to her office. She deserves to be appreciated! :)

When they show the wide angle, it looks like a lot of the chairs are empty. These dicks aren't willing to be there and listen to the objections of their constituents? Shameful.

It is not uncommon for some legislators to skip days in the 30-day sessions. Because they suck.
