Max, so is the blue card a way of doing a favor for the Agricultural Industry? Seems counter-intuitive that we would fast track the fruit picker but not a doctor, engineer, etc. Would love to get a deeper explanation of how these different levels of second class citizenship came to be.

Oh, the agricultural industry is definitely happy to have a new visa program to replace the H-2a program. The blue card isn't just available to undocumented immigrants currently in the U.S. (though they can apply for one), it is an entire new visa program that will replace the current temporary non-immigrant visa program for low-skilled agricultural workers (H-2A visas). It will be the only work visa to provide a direct path to citizenship — all of the others are still temporary non-immigrant visas. Theoretically, this is the exception to the rule because, unlike with high-skilled workers or other low-skilled workers, there isn't a concern that the incoming agricultural workers will displace U.S. workers.

I've never gotten the concept that American citizens won't work agricultural jobs. Who, the fuck, do you think worked those jobs 40 years and 30,000,000 million illegal immigrants ago? Would the profit of that industry decline? Yes. Would the cost of the product go up? Yes. Are those prices worth paying for hundreds of thousands of jobs that could be working class jobs for the most impoverished American citizens? I believe so.

The current system is just a gift to Big Agriculture and foreign nationals.

Republicans are just too racist to even try to prove they're not racist. It's unpossible as long as they continue to speak... or breathe for that matter.

Assuming that the Democrats aren't too soft with issues involving immigration and racial matters, then yes. However, this accusation alone is not enough to verbally assault the Republican party in terms that they should not be granted their constitutional rights or that they are not allowed to exist.

Because trying not to appear "soft" on terror nor "soft" on crime has gone oh so well...

BTW, calling someone a racist asshole does not infringe on their right to exist, it's just pointing out that they are racist assholes. In a way it's validating their existence, actually.

I wish the mainstream media had these types of policy explanations for every legislation that is passed, instead of writing about the political self-interest of the participants. I DO NOT CARE ABOUT HOW THIS BILL HELPS OR HURTS MARCO RUBIO'S PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRATIONS. Sick of reading these political gossip stories in lieu of substance and policy, I've been meaning to find some press that covers real political news that imparts how it affects all of us citizens. The Hill? Probably not Politico, which I hear is the worst offender of the horse race culture. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is it just me, or does the "blue card" thing seem almost predatory?

"We'll expedite your citizenship if you perform back-breaking labor for us for X number of years."

Really, i expected the GOP to about-face and embrace immigrants from central and south america, what with the high population of religious conservatives that would line up so nicely with their theocratic agenda.

I guess racism is a helluva drug.

It is and it isn't. On the one hand, you're absolutely right that it is a trade-off that as much benefits the agricultural industry and the U.S. economy as it does the individual. On the other, it will become the first and only work visa program that provides a direct path to citizenship.

While I agree with you in principle, in practice the back-breaking labor is already being performed by the same non-citizens - at least now there's a pathway to citizenship attached.

Do we really need to take in 100,000 highly educated STEM workers? I'm all for immigration to do "the jobs Americans don't want to do", but I'm not so comfortable with giving out 100,000 middle and upper middle class jobs to foreigners when our middle class is already getting squeezed.

I deal with this a lot in my job and while there are persuasive arguments there is a talent shortage at the high-end of STEM positions it totally ignores the fact the more high-skilled visas are allowed the less incentive companies have to train and fund their internal staff's development.

It's much cheaper to hire talent from countries that support the high cost of education as opposed to dealing with that problem here.

I couldn't agree more. No wonder corporate owned Repubs are all for this. Why pay to educate Americans at home when the 1% can just hire foreigners educated overseas without them having to pay for it?

I lived in Berlin during the 80's cos my Dad was in the Army. Every night, on the AFN evening news, we got to hear about another East German that was shot/blown up/attacked by dogs for trying to get over into the West. It made for an awesome childhood.
