Let's address the central question here: Deaf people actually go to concerts?

Do they at least feel the bass vibrations?

I'm totally confused, after all blind people don't go to museums. I guess it is just another social events where people can let loose, regardless of whether or not they can hear, but no totally deaf person can be a true music lover.

    It's a legitimate question.

Do you feel bass vibrations when you go to concerts? Deaf individuals can't hear, that's it. The legitimate question here actually is: Is it right to socially stigmatize a person with a handicap, such as deafness or blindness, as a person who can't enjoy certain events (museums, festivals) simply because they can't enjoy them the same way you know how to?

I once went to a show in that had the whole dance floor wired to the sound system specifically so deaf people could feel the vibrations generated by the music. Granted it was a benefit concert for a hearing loss charity but still, it was neat.

This makes sense because the only way I'd stand in a crowd to see R. Kelly preform would be if I were deaf.

She did at least one of the Bob Saget sets, too. Every year (every year) a comedian will notice the ASL translator and go off on the filthiest tangent they can come up with. The translators are always game and end up stealing the show, once attention has been drawn to them.

I want her to go on Live At Darryl's House to give her take on "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)."

Question for those who know something about ASL. Is she reacting to what they're saying or did she probably come in knowing all the lyrics? Impressed either way, but it'd be impossible to try and work it out as she works it out on the fly, no?

I'm sure someone who actually signs fluently will weigh in, but I'm almost positive she knew the lyrics in advance. Just like when someone sings along with a song they know.

Most interpreters prep before an assignment. Since this is a concert they probably gave her the set list before hand she probably had time to 'practice' the songs. Mind you if they decided to do a song that wasn't on the set list, she would have had to improvise. Either way she is AWESOME!

In Austin we have a monthly show that presents humorous monologues about sex. It's called Bedpost Confessions, and they always include an ASL interpreter, which makes for very engrossing signing. Moral of the story: Sign language interpreters boost every party to the next level.

No, but seriously. Sometimes a boring monologue about run-of-the-mill cunnilingus can be made ohh so much more interesting when expressed through hand gestures. Think about it.

One of the hardest laughs I have ever had was at the ASL interpreter for Ween during Austin City Limits. Piss Up a Rope stole the show.

I just made a comment about ASL interpreters at a different Austin event. Maybe our interpreters are particularly talented? I'd buy that.

I enjoyed the ASL interpreter's rendition of Closer by NIN at Lollapalooza in 2008. She really enjoyed the thrusting element of the lyrics. I think the ASL interpreters are the true rock stars of the festivals. I spend a lot of time watching them because they seem like true music fans!

Yeah every show of any stripe I've ever been to with an ASL interpreter, I've ended up just mesmerized by them. They always totally get into it and become this sensational bridge between language, the visual arts and dance. Amazing!
