      I thought the public and their cars did enough of that for them.

    Wow! My God, that's good to see. Here in the U.S., we'll hold endless televised hearings while our "leaders" tippy-toe around the issues and purport to be doing something while doing as little as humanly possible. A couple more spots like this, and I'm moving my family to Australia. As Randy Newman once sang, "They've got surfing too!"

      Exactly- eventually we'll put out a weakly worded statement that does nothing. Funny how Republicans like to talk about how people are too PC, but when it comes to shit like this, suddenly they're very sensitive to soldiers feelings, morale, etc.

      Before everyone gets their knickers in a twist about how sexist the US is compared to Australia, check this out: http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2013/06/…

    Imagine, a military leader demanding discipline from his subordinates in service to a larger goal...

    And that's exactly how we know the US military leaders are full of it. These guys (and they're mostly guys) are accustomed to being OBEYED, with consequences.

      Sigh, more anti-US (or rather every place is an utter utopia compared to the US) nonsense. Putting aside sexism being more of an issue in Australia as a whole than the US, considering just the military aspect of it, the US has had its own military leaders make a similar PSA;

      It's not anti-US, it's anti-current-military-leadership.

      There's not a lot of nuance in that distinction.

    Great speech. Now substitute "women" with "homosexuals" and we're getting somewhere.

      You're saying there is no homophobia in Australia at all, just sexism towards women?

      For a nation that seemingly loves "straight talk" this same type of message in the US would provoke scandal. There would be cries of the pussification of the country, that the feminist agenda has won the day, and whatever other nonsense people say to justify behaving like neanderthals. Maybe there will be blowback down under as well, but kudos to the ADF for sacking up and setting the record straight, with real words, not mealy mouthed highly edited drivel that says a lot but means nothing.

        Okay, for the record: I don't think there's a problem with the Senate hosting an all-male panel on sexual assault. The people they hauled up are the ones responsible for it. The point of the hearing wasn't "is there a problem with sexual assault in the military?" The point was: "What the fuck are you people going to do about it?" It so happens that the people in position to stop sexual assault in the military are men: both commanders, and the perpetrators. It's these men who should be held accountable for the abuse, so dragging them up and grilling them makes sense.

          I agree with you that men are the ones who need to take responsibility for this situation and change their behavior. However, it is very strange to exclude women from input completely. It would be like an all straight panel on gays in the military, or an all white panel discussing people of color in the military. Even just symbolically, it sort of says, "this subject is paramount to this group, they may be in a unique position to tell us where the system is broken or steps we could take to fix it, but we know better than this class of people. We can fix it without listening to them."
