I actually applied to get my cat on the show. Apparently revenge peeing doesn't make for good tv, but I did pay attention and mostly fixed my cat's bad behavior on my own.

A friend of mine is always on about that cute animals show. She texts me when it's on "It's on now! Switch over the channel to Animal Planet!"

I pretended to not know where the channel is or that they are showing auto racing.

    Not a fan.

I will not sit here and let Animal Planet be badmouthed while they still have Puppy Bowl. You can go straight to hell.

Why don't you try to rip on Unlikely Animal Friends or whatever it is while you're at it too? I dare you...

You have a point. Puppy Bowl is really the best thing on television. Plus, the hamsters!

That Mermaids documentary is some of the goofiest shit I have ever seen. I am completely obsessed with it. Just, how does this exist? Why? If it's just for entertainment, why the deadpan documentary style? Like, a while back Discovery (I think) did something called SUPERVOLCANO which was a film about what would happen if Yellowstone blows (spoiler: we'd all be fucked). Now, this was similar to the Mermaids thing, but the fiction segments that were intercut with the legit volcanology stuff were more clearly fiction.

My friends and I watched the first mermaid thingy when it was on, sort of accidentally. We were just flipping through channels and didn't catch the introduction or title while it was on. It started off as just kind of normal documentary about an ocean related mystery that was maybe a bit conspiracy theory-ish, until like 45 min in when they were like WHAM! MERMAIDS! Oh wait sorry, AQUATIC APES! (for real, that's what they called it).

I haven't watched it but feel compelled to point out that there is a real 'aquatics apes' theory (basically, that hominids learned to walk upright in flood/marsh conditions in Africa, because it's easier to switch from all fours to two legs in a semi-bouyant condition, like chest-deep water). Now, this isn't a popular or even terribly legitimate theory, but one that nonetheless exists. I have to believe Animal Planet was capitalizing on that, as well as the docu style, to further fuck with its audience.

I did not actually know that, but it makes sense that they would use it to fuck with people. And what you described isn't actually what they showed in this mess. They had hominids already walking upright, and then migrating back into the ocean, like whales (they specifically reference whales).

Exactly. It's just another in a long chain of channels that used to be amazing debasing itself for the lowest common denominator. Like this fucking bullshit

Parasites, bacteria, and viruses are not animals. They should be on Parasites, Bacteria and Viruses Planet instead of Animal Planet.

You forgot, "The Haunted," an Animal Planet series featuring haunted pets/pets that see ghosts. Yeah...

But you know what, even that doesn't piss me off as much as the 24 hour Christian propaganda machine that is the History Channel. There is NO historical Jesus people.

Not quite. You can't claim that there was no Jesus, simply that there is no contemporary, extra-biblical evidence of him. It's a fine distinction, and I'll readily admit that most people don't understand it, but it is still an important one to make. The case that he was a mythical creation rather than an actual person is pretty compelling, but without prove we should refrain judgement.

Ultimately, I think that the question of his actual existence is irrelevant, although I find it an interesting course of inquiry.

I stopped watching Animal Planet and Discovery after I worked with them during film of shark week. The photographers they sent were morons, and the ended up speeding up the footage of the sharks we gave them (after they were too inept to collect any themselves) to make it "more dramatic and exciting".

I haven't watched shark week or those channels in a while but I would say a good chunk of it is. I spent 6 weeks in South Africa diving with white sharks and filming them and the vast majority were not aggressive and many were pretty timid. There were one or two that were faster swimmers and went after the bait more aggressively, and we did have one breach but we saw about 30 different sharks. I'm not saying I wanted to be out of the cage with a tuna head wrapped around my neck but overall the sharks were pretty timid and cautious. So depending on what they're showing, I bet a lot of it has been dramatized.
