What would a Canadian do with $200,000? The things that I have read about that country lead me to believe they just sit around arguing whether or not they should speak French. This will probably triple the GDP for Canada. Do we really want to create a fledgeling superpower to our west? I hope Gawker's actions do not have more widespread repercussions.

This reminds me of a quote from Ghandi, "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Give a Canadian a fish, and...where the fuck is Canada?"

Sucks for the person that put in $10k... would it not have been a more reasonable/responsible move yesterday morning - knowing what you knew - to suspend the fundraiser until further contact was made? Or to contact indiegogo ahead of time to not authorize acceptance until Gawker could follow through on obtaining the video? Charity is great and all, but seems like there were other options that could have been explored.

I've never used Indiegogo for anything, but I was interested in the same questions you asked, so I looked at their helpfiles and it doesn't mention a mechanism to stop or pause a campaign. In fact, though I haven't seen their dashboard and based only on the helpfiles, it sounds like Indiegogo chose to make them impossible to do.

The 10K came in after John posted he'd lost contact, so they knew what they were getting themselves into.

My hope is it was someone who did it with plans of putting the phone into the hands of an authenticator so that all that "it was doctored" BS can be quelled.

Yeah, I'm still hoping they'll slither outta the woodwork today now that they know the money's really coming...

Man, if you guys actually get this video the ad revenue you rake in is totally going to make every dollar you spent of other people's money totally worth it.

Just want to reiterate my suggestion from yesterday for a charity that is well worth donating too John http://www.supportcamh.ca/

It's an addictions and mental health organization in the GTA.

Also, I'm quite amazed that you managed to raise the funds. Can't wait to find out what happens next. BTW Indiegogo and Paypal will keep a portion of the donated money, can't remember the numbers but they do take a cut.

I had the same thought. CAMH is a worthy organization that helps people with addiction and/or mental health issues. I hope the people at Gawker are listening to those Torontonians who are making suggestions on this one. CAMH is an integral part of the mental health system here and it is deserving of such a generous donation.

Both the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, and Toronto’s Bellwood Health Services, which offers addiction treatment and prevention services, said the boards of their respective foundations would likely have to deliberate before making a decision.

“A situation like this has never come up before, in terms of the source of the money,” said Michael Torres, a CAMH spokesman. “There are certain standards that the foundation has and they would have to discuss those.”

If it happens, it's going to have to be a cash transaction, right? Oh John Cook, please do not get murdered.

Give the bloodsuckers selling the video the money in the form of a check only, or in marked bills. Either way, let them hang for this bullshit. $200,000 for a video they possibly murdered someone to get? Sounds kosher.

I don't buy the "they murdered someone to get the video". That makes no sense. If it was Anthony Smith—they couldn't have tried to steal it from him. So did they kill him and the nightclub and grab his phone, to get a video that, at the time, they could only guess would get them some money? Then they give Gawker a photo featuring Anthony Smith, the man they shot, in it? That would be pretty brazen.

Just a guess at this point, but I really think based on the events of the last few days (David Price knowing the address of the video, not telling police) that it is conceivable Anthony Smith had the the video, Rob Ford had him shot, made it look like a gangland shooting, Anthony Smith's trusted friend had the video, decided to cash in as revenge and a way to get himself out of town.

Considering we're talking about a blackmailing drug dealer here, presumably with a rather low moral threshold, he'd be a fucking idiot to have sold the only copy (to the Fords, as has been widely speculated) without retaining a copy to bilk Gawker for. Have your cake and smoke it, too.

That is, if he hasn't already been suffocated under Rob Ford's arm-fat curtains. I expect that is likely.

YES!! What a wondeful, well-spent giant chunk of change this will be, Gawker. All of you who contributed instead of say, giving to a charity to help tornado victims or feed the hungry should be so proud.

Why are you assuming that the donators didn't also give money to those charities? Five or ten bucks (which is what the average contributor contributed) thrown to a cause to help our neighbors to the north get a very bad man out of office should not be considered a wate of money.

In the meantime, it seems that our neighbors to the North (at least in Toronto and the surrounding areas that Ford is mayor of) don't actually give a shit that their mayor smokes crack.

If you do end up donating to charity, make sure that they have a good history of using the money towards their goal.

        http://www.charitywatch.org/

Does a good job for US and US-based charities though I am not sure if our Northern brothers have a similar tool.
