Saw a statistic on the national news last night that said our infrastructure is fucked. Apparently 1 in 9 bridges and overpasses in the U.S. are rated as "structurally deficient." How this isn't a priority in a jobs-soft economy is beyond me.

This will sounds partisan (And I guess it is) but MANY times Obama tried to get jobs bills through that included projects addressing these issues and practically EVERY time the GOP blocked the bills -in my mind to keep job reports crappy. Good for them, huh?

That really wasn't the point of this article... as the train made the bridge collapse, not the maintenance of said bridge.

If that was me, I would have floored it and jumped my car over the danger.

So we're moving back to the States this summer after 14+ years overseas. I've just started to get my mind wrapped around the religious crazies, and the gun crazies, and the political crazies (I know we had all those back in the '90s, but they all seem to have gotten worse and sort of mind-melded with each other), but people, please let me know: do I now also have to take into consideration the fact that the entire country is in a kind of physical collapse as well?

Maybe it's best just to hang out in the Sandlands, where we all know the people are nuts and the buildings are shoddy, but at least I don't have any kind of personal connection to the madness...

Stick to the hard-core blue regions. Their citizens are more willing to pay the taxes to maintain important sh*t like police, emergency services, roads, schools, and infrastructure.

This wasn't caused by infrastructure problems, other than the questionable decision of putting a railroad intersection directly under a highway bridge.

it's better than having the train go over the highway or cross directly on the highway.

True, but maybe I should have worded my comment "questionable decision of building a highway overpass directly over a railroad intersection". The railroad intersection was probably there before the bridge or even the roadway.

This is not your usual failed infrastructure. A derailed train is going to take out even the best bridge/overpass supports.

I really really REALLY wish I still knew people at the NTSB right now.

Holy shit... trains T-bones another train... thats insane... should not be able to happen... like, at all! This is bonkers...

I'd really like to know who owns and maintains that section of track.

"There were no cars on the highway when it collapsed, but two cars did drive onto the overpass in the dark, not seeing that the road had given out."

3:1 odds that at least one of the car insurance companies doesn't cover the damage claiming it the fault of the driver.
