I don't think they even made bike helmets in the 60's. I don't remember ever seeing one and none of my friends or I ever had one.

I don't remember them in the 70's either. If one of my friends would have worn one of those silly looking helmets, it would have ended in swirlies and purple nurples.

Paul was in the Air Force from'63-'65. He's in uniform so we can assume this is no later than 1965. Rand was born in January 1963. The photo appears to have been taken in the summer; that would make Rand about 18 months old, which looks about right.

I'm going to date this shot at August 1965. Where it was taken, who knows, but it looks like it could be AF base housing based on how the houses all look exactly the same. I doubt it was Texas, because if he was riding a bike around in August in Texas, he'd look a lot more disheveled.

It could have been spring in Texas! I lived in Texas not far from Paul's district around this time, as a baby, and my parents claim it was delightful for about two weeks of spring and for about two weeks in the fall.

No, that's what Houston winters look like.

Forget about Ron Paul here for a moment. Let's talk about this White Flight.

Yes, it happened. It happened very heavily after the circa 1967 race riots, especially in Newark, NJ. But let's not blame all of these suburbs to be effects of a so-called white flight. If you honestly think that's the sole reason, you're wrong.

      1. The post-war Baby Boom. Soldiers came home & did a lot of overdue-mattress wrestling, and who wants to raise 2 or more kids in a cramped city apartment? So, you go out & buy a nice home in the suburbs, with a lawn & some extra space.

      2. A lot of immigrants came to the cities, worked hard all their life, and some saw suburban life as a luxury, not "just to escape the unruly minorities." I'm sure I'd appreciate a nice newly-built ranch home than a cramped, stifled 1 bedroom city apartment.

I like reading Gawker, but sometimes you guys really place up some stupid things.

Thanks for pointing this out. I think solely focusing on the sub-urbanization of America as being wholly caused by whites wanting to flee from inner city minorities is an over-simplification of America's move to the suburbs. Sure, that factors into it, but there were a lot of other factors involved as well such as the combination of affordable vehicles and the new interstate highway system allowing for the baby boomers to move farther from the city. This was the beginning of the so-called 'American Dream'.

That cloudy, gray sky screams "Pittsburgh"—a city with all the overcast misery of the Pacific Northwest without any of the good coffee.
