Question, John Cook: how much is Gawker putting up in this endeavor?

Gawker put in $15,000 on the first day. Not sure if they've made any additional contributions since then.

Pledge 1oo dollars and Amanda Palmer will write a poem about whatever current event you'd like.

You know, its a little incongruous when Gawker has made 2 Million in one day (!) to be begging for 200k from the public like a scrappy media pauper.

Perhaps Nick could sell a yacht or something and raise the remaining crackstarter funds himself.

I think Zack Braff's latest Crapstarter was Denton's inspiration.

      I think so too.

Gawker's modus operandi: attack something someone else does, call it self-serving and unethical, then do the same thing themselves.

In a way I can't blame them. The lure of being able to crowdsource financing for your projects with very few strings attached is a pretty sweet deal.

I don't understand why anyone would give money to a "gotcha" plan like this one - especially if those profiting are drug dealers conspiring to illegally profit off their original crimes. I'd applaud you if you'd brought home the tape John, but you're still a good enough reporter to have actually written up a decent report on this - perhaps exposing the actual criminals involved. Books have been written about corrupt mayors, and I doubt the authors combined made 200k for their efforts. Pulitzer prize winner Mike Stanton wrote this:

You're right. An investigative criminal expose is absolutely in the remit of a gossip website, and whats really important is classist tutting about poors who sell drugs.

I appreciate the sarcasm, but John Cook is a fine investigative journalist, and I expected more from him.

If this were Eric Cantor, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, I'd probably give $5. Some 2 bit mayor of a city that isn't even in the US? MEH!

Pretty sure we all want to donate to, I don't know, the victims of yesterday's tornado over something you could clearly just pay for your own damn selves. The timing of this (second) plea is pretty gross.

Because as an adult you can't make that decision for yourself? Or donate to both? I love the comments acting like Gawker is FORCING its readers to donate to this! People get to do what they want with their money, no matter how stupid it is.

I think you really need to spell out to your readers why this is a good idea, because here are some reasons, just off the top of my head, why it seems really terrible:

      - Is this really what we want to be giving $200k to, instead of say, Oklahoma or One Fund Boston or countless other charities that matter? If it will make a huge difference to the people of Toronto, can't they come up with the money?

      - Can Nick Denton really not afford this himself if it's so goddamn important?

      - Do you really want to be responsible for giving all of this money to someone in the drug trade?

These are the questions. If they've been answered elsewhere, I'm happy to be pointed in the right direction.

We returned empty-handed, sadly, because the owner of the tape wanted more money than Gawker could offer.

Are you saying that Gawker Media doesn't have that kind of money? Whatever happened to the slush fund for dick pics and people coming forward to finally explain how Magic Johnson got HIV?

I would pledge something, but... you know... Then I wouldn't be able to spend it on the crack.
