Most priests I've ever spoken to are just as skeptical about demonic possession as non-Catholics. They study it, but they believe that 99.99999% of cases aren't really possession, but some kind of illness. I doubt the Pope knowingly performed an Exorcism, but hey, anything could happen.

Though the New Testament is always clear to distinguish when Jesus healed a person from illness, or commanded a demon to come out (my favourite example is the one involving Legion and the pigs).

Yeah, but the priests are also quite quick to note that they are not Jesus or his saints, so things might not work quite as smoothly.

The Italian voice over very explicitly calls it an exorcism, if you care what TV2000 thinks (it's like the all-Vatican public access cable channel over here. Lots of heat-warming stories of faith and redemption for you to flip past real fast on your way to the dubbed American reality shows).

    My translation:

The Pope, as usual, goes to pray for the sick children in attendance at the mass. As he approaches this boy, the priest introduces him, and tells the Pope that he [the boy] needs an exorcism.

The Pope's expression becomes serious; he extends his hands over the boy, and prays intensely.

/interlude with organ music; boy convulsing/

//One of Pope's entourage snatches the file away from the priest who introduced the boy//

The exorcists have no doubts [it seems implied here they asked some? But no explanation given] - It was a prayer for liberation, or, a true exorcism. [seems to me like those are two different things, like different levels of casting out of demons or something. Maybe a Catholic might know?]
