I think you're cynical. This nice guy did a nice thing, we really don't need to make this into a class war.

I hate stories like this- because when I waited tables, I for some reason assumed that I'd also one day get some insane tip from an unknown yet generous patron like I'd read about. How delighted I'd be, I imagined! How grateful!

But instead, I usually got tips in the 10-15% range

    (probably b/c I wasn't a very good waitress, lol)

Ha, I always secretly expected that day to come too! Alas, instead of a $1000 tip I just got multiple marriage proposals from creepy men old enough to be my grandfather. Oh well, I shall not begrudge this server her tip. Yay for her!

Yes! And the old men who would drop thinks, I suspect, just to see me bend down and pick them up? I figure 20 of those customers definitely = $1000 tip.

Naw, I'm definitely happy for this lady. Keep hope alive!!

This is awesome. If I had won the half-billion dollar powerball, I would do stuff like this.

That was one of the things that was on my list if I ever won that giant Powerball a while ago. I would love to be able to just go into several restaurants and leave a $500 tip, or drop a couple hundreds into the tip jar for my favorite barista, or just randomly buy the groceries for everybody behind me in line at the grocery store. Though, I would want to do it anonymously somehow so people didn't keep expecting me to drop that kind of cash all the time.

Amen. I felt so happy the day I could leave a $20 tip on a cup of coffee. The woman in line ahead of us was a real bitch and the cashier was still pretty new. I hope it made her day a little easier.

      It did.

      Guarantee it.

I deal with rich people in one of my many jobs. They're never nice. Making the "help" feel like shit is the only way they can feel good about themselves.

Wonder what happens to the 42 cents . . .

(Nice guy, but he can't add — though $1000 does have a better ring to it than $999.58.)

well I believe that the bottom total is the number that they ring through, it doesn't matter what number you put on the tip line.

In a novel this would be dismissed as unrealistic and corny. Life overtaking art.

Well in the novel she would end up meeting this specific dude in Italy and marrying him.

Or she would go to Italy, meet another dude and marry him. And keep a long-running correspondence with the person who gave her the money, which becomes the basis for an epistulary.
