I heard when you call the Army's rape hotline you get the sound of heavy breathing and some guy fapping.

It's almost as if the military is an organization that engenders violence and dehumanization.

This weekend my MIL informed us that all of this is due to letting women into combat.

Fox News told her so, I believe.

At what point is being racist towards old white guys in government just...okay across the board?

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel reacted to the news with “frustration, anger, and disappointment over these troubling allegations and the breakdown in discipline and standards they imply.”

This is just a nice way of saying Hagel threw his phone across the room and yelled "Oh, for fuck sake!"

              Seems about right.

Is it "fuck sake" or "fuck's sake"? I always thought the latter but now I am not sure.

USA Today's reporting that he was also running a prostitution ring. Jesus, this asshole sounds like a class act.

Also, before people run too far with this, let's also keep in mind that this was a sergeant 1st class running a battalion-level program (about 600-800 soldiers).

So while this guy is probably a total dirtbag and a terrible human being, the "ironic" scope of this case is nowhere near that of the Air Force case in which the accused was overseeing the service-wide sexual assault prevention program.

How hard is it to just, you know, NOT sexually assault someone? I feel like that should be the number one characteristic of someone who holds the office of HEAD of Sexual Assault Prevention. Guys (or gals!), really, it's not that hard to just NOT do this. Plenty of people get through their day without sexually assaulting people. In fact, I didn't sexually assault anyone just today!

On a side note, I have a feeling their program is preeeetty ineffective.

One of the fascinating things I learned from "Silent War" is that the perpetrators are usually serial-offenders who operate much like child-abusers. They learn the system and pick targets carefully while cultivating a good external reputation. As vile as it is, it gives me hope that it's a fixable problem as opposed to all men somehow being possible rapists.

No wonder US military hasn't managed to get sexual abuse under control.

Why is it that pervs seek out (much less gain admission to) these kinds of leadership jobs? Is it power? Access? Do they consider it a more effective cover?

In my experience as a former EO rep for my old unit, I have to say that some (not all, in any sense of the word) of the individuals who attended the Equal Opportunity Leaders Course where I received my training had no place being there.

Basically the way it work is like this. Every unit is required to have EO reps, and on occasion you'll get "leaders" who just want to check the block on that requirement and just send whoever to get certified. Most of these folks are great people and take the job seriously, but the occasional shitheel slips though the system.

Because it's a self-licking ice cream cone. Good 'ol boys promote those who think just like themselves. Diversity in our armed forces means, "get me some brownish people who think like we do, plus a woman." In my 21 years of active duty, I've not seen things so volatile. As the ol' boys retire, those who think and act just like them a struggling to maintain their power against the tide of a young generation with little tolerance for 1950s thought. The result is more paranoia and more angry boys taking out frustrations on victims.
