As an olde , I am in constant relief that Twitter and FB didn't exist when I was in high school... I can only imagine the shitstorms that would've ensued. I mean, it was bad enough with the mass-copied dirty memos anonymously slipped into everyone's lockers, and the meager amount of trash talking that happened among the 12 of us who actually had a computer at home and knew how to dial into a BBS, but Jesus, fuck having everyone shit-talking via Tweets. I don't envy them kidz these daysâ„¢ at all..

Dude, I wonder if kids still slip mass-memos of hate into lockers anymore. I miss those days.

Hah, you ready for me to bloowwwww your minnnd?

My 20th reunion was last summer, and so the day before the festivities, a current teacher at our old highschool was kind enough to take a handful of us on a little tour of the campus — as a TON of shit had changed, and a lot of things were unrecognizable.

Excited to go up to my old locker and see if my keyed graffiti was still on the inside door from 1992, I was surprised to see they've moved the lockers. Back in the day, the lockers were all over fucking campus mounted to every building possible. "Oh, so where did they move the lockers to? Some sort of central location or something?" and the lady laughed. "Lockers?" "We don't use lockers anymore!" Christ, I'm only 38 and I felt like I was Marty McFly at the fucking Cafe 80s asking for a Pepsi Free. So, um, where do the kids store all their books? (Wait for it..) .. THEY DONT CARRY BOOKS ANYMORE. I'm like, what the fuck, is all their homework carried home on a thumb drive that they plug into some sort of 3D holodeck? Apparently, a lot of shit has changed.

And so in a one hour tour of my old highschool, I instantly understood what it must've felt like for my grandparents who, when in their 90s, would hold up a music CD and look at it like it was the most futuristic shit ever.

damn I didn't think school faculty involved themselves in twitter drama this petty. No racism, no threats, just a complaint. This is a fucking stupid way to introduce a young adult into adulthood

Obviously the school has no other issues to work on, everything there is perfect. Every kid is graduating with honors, everyone got into college, the school ground are perfectly maintained, all the kids love each other, all is just going so damn well at Heights HS!

I feel there are two possibilities: Either you didn't go to a high school where athletics are the main focus (I did, and it turns my stomach), or you were in an athletics program at a high school were athletics were a "big deal."

"Who gives a shit?" I do, because holy freaking god, I'm guessing there's a lot of this same crap going on around the United States. "Yeah, if you even sort of half-heartedly badmouth our athletics, we will throw the book at you and you'll never see your diploma." God only knows what would have happened at my high school in south Louisiana...

So, uh, don't badmouth athletics? I was neither of those things to describe, but I did learn the hard way that in the real world, your mouth can get you into trouble. Maybe this dude just learned that lesson, too, and it'll do him right in the years to come.

So they kicked him out with four days left and then banned him from walking down the isle which would have also included one to two several hours long pointless dress rehearsals and then receiving an empty book that contains a "your diploma goes here" sticker because they're going to mail it to him several weeks later?

    Two questions:
    1) Is there a punishment in here somewhere I'm missing?
    2) Why was this deserving of a punishment?

Ah, athlete-obsessed high schools! Athlete sexual assaults classmate: no big deal, the coach will give him a talking to! School president insults football team on twitter: immediate suspension and banned from graduation!

Whoa whoa whoa, this is something you can get suspended over, saying your sports team sucks?

Pretty sure this is violating 1st amendment or something. And even if it ain't, schools shouldn't be this upset over Twitter

So you CAN restrict student speech for a number of reasons, legally. If you are voicing a opinion about a matter of public concern, you get the most protection, but it still can't disrupt the educational process. If you are just talking about other stuff, less so. You can get in trouble for something published outside of school if it causes disruption. Not saying they should do anything to this guy, but yeah, the first amendment doesn't gives you 100% leeway to speak about anything at any time when you're a student.

If this is a public high school, this has to be an illegal deprivation of his first amendment rights. How can he possibly be suspended for innocuous speech made outside of school? A reasonable student under the same or similar circumstances could not have foreseen that a small dig at his school's athletic program would "incite a disturbance." America is quickly becoming the nation of overreaction. Calm down everyone.

And this shows the lack of leadership at this school district. Who cares that someone said something negative about your athletic program. Did the person threaten someone, no. Did the person accuse someone of misconduct, no. If your students are so miffed by this tweet, there were failures to give them the basics of self esteem and social skills.

Seriously? what a bunch of overly sensitive weenies at that school. Suspend the kid because he is critical of something. This is absurd!
