It depends on the fabric to a surprising degree. I work at a greenhouse over the summer, and I can be as comfortable in a hijab, long sleeves and long skirt as anyone else as long as it's a breathable fabric. Polyester is a killer.

I cannot even wrap my head around such extreme gender segregation in a place like Saudi Arabia. I'm of the understanding that the country is hella modern and has a very high college education ratio (please correct me if I'm wrong on that) for both genders. Not trying to be obtuse; I just don't get it.

As far as education goes, Saudi Arabia comes in pretty low; according to Wikipedia: Education Index, the United Nations ranks them at #110 out of 181. The state's considered to have "high" human development— per Wikipedia: List of countries by Human Development Index, #57 out of 186, tied with Bulgaria.

The shining skyscrapers and such are the result of mind-bending income disparities; basically, the royal family has all the oil, and everyone else has sand.

Saudi Arabia has one of the worst inequalities in the world. People are either filthy rich or extremely poor there.

Does anyone have any resources on Saudi feminism - books, blogs, etc?

I just read the Princess books by Jean Sasson. Not sure if that was feminism, but it was enlightening.
