I have to say I kind of like this. I know many people in this country in varying states of immigration limbo. Describing their various situations under any catchall term is difficult, and usually inaccurate.

Or so it will be until the Koch brothers buy out the paper, as rumoured. Then they'll just break out the 1955 stylebook and use the term "w*tbacks."

Why are most other articles claiming that the LA Times shift "puts everyone else on the spot," when this change was adopted and recommended by the AP a month ago?

I've seen that as well—I think their point is that with each newspaper making these changes official, it highlights other papers that continue this practice.

Here's a good article about the AP changes in early April, if you're interested in some examples of the way it was covered: http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/04/03/ap-…

I've been an immigration attorney for over 12 years. The majority of "Entry Without Inspection" (the Citizenship and Immigration Services term) people that I've spoken with will simply say, "Soy ilegal." [I'm illegal.]

The drama queens within the American Immigration Lawyers Association prefer the term 'noncitizen.' That's such an imprecise term to be used by lawyers, it's like doctors referring to everyone as 'dead' or 'nondead.'

Wait - I get the aversion to "illegal immigrant," but what's the problem with "undocumented"? I'd always understood that to be the preferred alternative. If not "undocumented," what term should I be using?

Maybe I'm biased, because a friend of mine got deported and then welcomed back multiple times while trying to get a permanent visa, but: What the fuck should we call folks who just ignore our immigration laws and sneak in? "People who entered the country illegally?"
