Someone posted on the article that since his identical twin brother is straight that means that homosexuality is a choice. So, exactly how identical are identical twins? I mean, can one get a genetic disorder like Huntington's disease but the other remains perfectly healthy? And NO I am not saying homosexuality is a disorder, I'm gay. I'm genuinely curious if EVERY gene is the same and active in both. I've heard about the study of epigenetics but don't know much about it and how it would apply in this situation.

Also, Max, having your avatar sit there and continually blink at me while I type this is really creepy.

    Edited for grammatical errors ;-)

Identical twins have identical DNA, but that does not mean they are exactly the same. Our genes are not like on/off switches, but more like weighted odds. The DNA is identical, but the activity of the genes can differ. For example, identical twins can have different eye colors and different fingerprints.

In many studies, if one identical twin is gay, there is a 50-60% chance the other will be gay. This is obviously many times higher than the general population.

Just a personal anecdote, I have many friends who are gay and have a gay twin. I do have one gay friend who has a straight twin.

Also it may just not have to do with genetics.

It is quite possible the hormones a developing child in the womb is flushed with have a significant effect on sexual attraction and identification. This can be because of external environmental factors or a range of other causes.

In this way you can have genetically identical twins with different gender roles/sexual attractions/etc.

Good on him. And good on him for expressing so well the utter exhaustion that must come with living any sort of closeted life.

Does this mean we're one step closer to not caring who's gay anymore?

Because really, for those of us who evolved past caring as teenagers, having to see everyone else slowly crawl, inch by inch, to acceptance each time one of these stories comes out? It's boring.

I wonder if it easier to be out in basketball as opposed to football. The team is smaller, it's less of a tough guy sport...I only hope the basketball fans treat him with respect.

          Happiness to you Jason.

I'm guessing that the NBA locker room culture is generally less hostile to people who are different. I mean, people thought Ricky Williams was weird because he acted like a regular stoner and Chad Johnson was too "flamboyant".

In contrast, the NBA has a goofy German dude who likes to sing David Hasselhoff songs during a game, a dude named "Metta World Peace", and an all-star point guard who's trying to be a cross between Donald Glover and Tyler, The Creator. Plus, there are fewer built-in cliques in the NBA - in the NFL, you generally have divisions between offense vs defense, linemen vs "skill" players, guys who like to blast country vs guys who like to blast rap.

Dennis Rodman existed in the NBA too.

"Some people insist they've never met a gay person. But Three Degrees of Jason Collins dictates that no NBA player can claim that anymore."

          Aw. Kudos to him!

Wasn't John Amaechi the first openly gay pro athlete when he played for the Utah Jazz? or did he come out after? Because when he was playing I know he was pretty visible in the gay community in Salt Lake.
